Luke Richard Maile (born February 6, 1991) is an American professional baseball catcher who is a free agent. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays, Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Guardians, Cincinnati Reds, and Kansas City Royals. A durable backstop known for his defense and clubhouse presence, Maile has spent more than a decade moving between organizations while contributing at the major league level.
Before turning professional, Maile developed his game in his home state of Kentucky, starring in high school and then starring for the Kentucky Wildcats in the Southeastern Conference. Tampa Bay Rays (2015–2017)
The Tampa Bay Rays selected Maile in the eighth round, 272nd overall, of the 2012 MLB Draft. He was assigned to the Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades and appeared in 61 games in 2012, batting .278 with three home runs and 41 RBIs. The following year, he played 95 games for the Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods, finishing at .283 with four home runs and 49 RBIs, and he also suited up for the Salt River Rafters of the Arizona Fall League.
In 2014, Maile played for the Montgomery Biscuits of the Double-A Southern League, hitting .268 with five home runs and 37 RBIs in 97 games. He was promoted to the Triple-A Durham Bulls at the end of August but did not appear in a game at that level that season. After a 2015 Triple-A campaign in which he hit .207 in 89 games, the Rays promoted him to the majors on September 1, 2015. He appeared in 15 games for Tampa Bay that year, batting .171 with two RBIs. The Toronto Blue Jays claimed Maile off waivers on April 6, 2017, and recalled him from the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on April 28. His season was interrupted by a torn meniscus in his left knee, suffered in early July, and he was activated from the disabled list on September 1. He finished 2017 hitting .146 with two home runs in 46 games.
Maile served as Toronto’s backup catcher in 2018 and posted a .248 average with three home runs and 27 RBIs. An oblique injury limited him to 44 games in 2019, when he batted .151 with two home runs. On December 2, 2019, the Blue Jays non-tendered him, making him a free agent.

On December 16, 2019, Maile signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His 2020 season was cut short on July 18 when the team announced he would undergo season-ending finger surgery after being hit by a pitch in an exhibition game. On October 30, 2020, the Pirates outrighted him off the 40-man roster.
Milwaukee Brewers (2021)
Maile signed a one-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on December 8, 2020. He made his Milwaukee debut on April 30, 2021, entering as a pinch runner before remaining in the game behind the plate. In 15 games with the Brewers, he hit .300 with three RBIs before electing free agency on November 5, 2021, after rejecting an outright assignment to Triple-A.
Cleveland Guardians (2022)
Maile signed a one-year deal with the Cleveland Guardians on March 14, 2022. Backing up Austin Hedges, he hit .221 with three home runs in 76 games. On November 20, 2022, Maile signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds. In 74 games, he set a career high with six home runs, batting .235/.308/.391 with 25 RBI. He re-signed with the Reds on October 19, 2023, on a one-year, $3.5 million deal for 2024. His production dipped that season, as he slashed .178/.268/.252 with two home runs, eight RBI, and two stolen bases in 53 appearances. Cincinnati declined his 2025 option on November 1, 2024, returning him to free agency.
Kansas City Royals (2025)
Maile signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals on February 16, 2025, but was released on March 23 after failing to make the Opening Day roster. He re-signed with Kansas City on a minor league deal on March 25, hit .286 with a home run and 10 RBI in 12 games for the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers, and had his contract selected on May 2. In his Royals debut on May 4, he homered off Charlie Morton of the Baltimore Orioles.
