Patrick Brown Bio
Patrick Wellington Brown (born May 29, 1992) is an American professional ice hockey forward and captain of the Providence Bruins in the American Hockey League (AHL). He plays under contract for the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). Standing 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 209 pounds, the Bloomfield Hills, Michigan native has built his career on a steady, defense-first style, holding down a bottom-six role and key faceoff duties. He won the Calder Cup with the Charlotte Checkers in 2019 and has represented Team USA at the 2023 IIHF World Championship.
Early Life and Background
Brown was born on May 29, 1992, in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, to Doug Brown, a former National Hockey League right winger, and Maureen Brown. His father played 15 NHL seasons and won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships with the Detroit Red Wings in 1997 and 1998, and his uncle Greg played professional ice hockey across North America and Europe for 11 years before moving into coaching with the Boston College Eagles. He grew up around the rink, and that environment shaped his early view of the game.
Through his mother’s side, Brown is a member of the Mara family. His mother is the daughter of Wellington and Ann Mara and part of the family that owns 50 percent of the New York Giants. He is also cousins with actresses Kate and Rooney Mara. Brown followed his father into the sport and, in 2005, played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor team from Detroit, an early marker of his competitive path.
Path to Professional Hockey
Brown went on to play for the Boston College Eagles men’s ice hockey team in the NCAA Hockey East Conference from 2010 to 2014, wearing the captain’s letter in his senior year. He was part of the Eagles roster that won the 2012 NCAA National Championship, a formative experience that helped prepare him for the professional level. His family background and college résumé made him a closely watched prospect even without being selected in the NHL Draft.
On April 12, 2014, he signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes as an undrafted free agent, beginning his professional career. He was recalled to the Hurricanes’ opening night roster in his first pro season, completing the jump from college to the NHL in less than five months.

He spent most of his first seasons in the Carolina organization with their AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers, becoming team captain from 2016 to 2019. He recorded his first NHL goal and first NHL assist on March 31, 2016, against the New York Rangers, an early sign of his offensive game at the top level.
As captain of the Checkers, Brown helped lead the team to the 2019 Calder Cup, the AHL’s championship trophy. That title cemented his reputation as a leader and a reliable two-way center within the Carolina system.

After spending the first five seasons of his professional career in the Hurricanes organization, Brown signed a two-year, $1.4 million contract with the Vegas Golden Knights on July 1, 2019. He spent most of that year with Vegas’s AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves, while seeing his first NHL game with the Golden Knights, a February 23, 2020 contest in which he scored against the Anaheim Ducks.
Brown was placed on the team’s taxi squad late in the season and was inserted into Game 3 of the first-round series against the Chicago Blackhawks after Paul Stastny and Tomáš Nosek were unavailable, scoring his first NHL playoff goal in a 2-1 victory. He finished the 2020 playoffs with two goals in 12 games as the Golden Knights reached the Western Conference Final, where they were eliminated by the Dallas Stars. In 2021, he was named the first captain of the Golden Knights’ new AHL affiliate, the Henderson Silver Knights.
Philadelphia Flyers and Ottawa Senators Era (2021–2023)
Brown was placed on waivers by Vegas on October 10, 2021, and was claimed by the Philadelphia Flyers the next day. Limited to 44 games in his first year with Philadelphia because of injuries, he played mainly on the fourth line as a faceoff specialist, fitting into a checking role. On January 11, 2023, he appeared in his 100th NHL game, a career milestone for the hard-working center.
On March 3, 2023, the Flyers traded Brown to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. He finished the 2022-23 season with 43 games for the Flyers, registering two goals and seven points, and then joined Team USA at the 2023 IIHF World Championship, where the team finished fourth.
Boston Bruins Era (2023–Present)
As a free agent from the Senators, Brown signed a two-year, $1.6 million contract with the Boston Bruins on July 1, 2023, joining his fifth NHL club. After training camp, he failed to make Boston’s opening roster and was waived on October 8, going unclaimed before being assigned to the Providence Bruins on October 9. He was quickly recalled on October 10 and appeared in eight games with Boston, registering one point, before being returned to Providence on November 25.
Brown spent most of the rest of the 2023-24 season in Providence, with two brief late-season call-ups in late December and January totaling three more NHL games.
