Tanner Gordon Bio
Tanner Robert Gordon (born October 26, 1997) is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Colorado Rockies of Major League Baseball (MLB). The right-hander progressed through the college ranks at John A. Logan College and Indiana University before being selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 2019 MLB draft.
Following several seasons in the Braves’ minor league system, Gordon was traded to the Colorado Rockies in 2023. He made his major league debut in July 2024 and is regarded as a developing starter within the Rockies’ pitching ranks.
Early Life and Background
Tanner Robert Gordon grew up in the Champaign area of Illinois and attended Champaign Central High School, where he played baseball. During his time there, he picked up the nickname “Big Oak” and developed into one of the area’s most recognizable prep arms.
In his senior year, Gordon was named the News-Gazette “All-Area performer” in 2016, an honor that recognized his on-field impact for Champaign Central. That recognition helped set the stage for his transition into college baseball at the junior college level.
Path to Professional Baseball
After high school, Gordon played his first two seasons of college baseball at John A. Logan College, a junior college located in Carterville, Illinois. As a freshman, he went 6–0 in 14 games played, logging a 3.44 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings. He built on that start as a sophomore, going 9–2 with a 2.06 ERA and 104 strikeouts across 70 innings.
Across his two seasons with John A. Logan, Gordon compiled a 15–2 record and 2.63 ERA, striking out 156 batters in 119 2/3 innings. After his sophomore year, he transferred to Indiana University, where he spent his junior season with the Hoosiers in 2019. At Indiana, he went 6–6 with a 3.81 ERA, recording 90 strikeouts in 87 1/3 innings. That college performance convinced the Atlanta Braves to select him in the sixth round, with the 187th overall pick, of the 2019 MLB draft.

Early Career (2019–2020)
Gordon began his professional career with the rookie-level Danville Braves after being drafted in 2019. The 2020 minor league season was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, so he did not appear in a game that year.
Atlanta Braves Development (2021–2023)
Gordon returned to action in 2021, splitting time between the Single-A Augusta GreenJackets and the High-A Rome Braves. In 22 games and 21 starts, he posted a 6–8 record with a 3.90 ERA and 109 strikeouts across 108 1/3 innings.
In 2022, Gordon continued to develop with Rome and the Double-A Mississippi Braves, combining for a 12–7 record and a 4.64 ERA with 133 strikeouts in 120 1/3 innings. He opened the 2023 season with Mississippi before earning a promotion to the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers, where he went 1–4 with an 8.28 ERA in six games.
Colorado Rockies Era (2023–Present)
On July 24, 2023, Gordon and pitcher Victor Vodnik were traded to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for Pierce Johnson. He spent the rest of that season with the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats and the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes, going 2–2 with a 5.96 ERA at Hartford and 1–1 with a 4.31 ERA at Albuquerque.
Gordon began the 2024 season with Albuquerque. On July 7, 2024, he was added to the 40-man roster and promoted to the major leagues for the first time. He made his MLB debut that day against the Kansas City Royals at Coors Field.
