Byron Lowell Donalds (born October 28, 1978) is an American politician and financial professional who has served as the U.S. representative for Florida’s 19th congressional district since January 2021. A member of the Republican Party, he previously served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2016 to 2020, representing District 80. Donalds is widely recognized for his conservative policy positions and his brief candidacy for Speaker of the House in 2023.
Before entering public service, Donalds built a career in banking, insurance, and financial advising across Southwest Florida. He has become a prominent voice within the Republican Party’s right wing and a frequent commentator on economic policy, government reform, and conservative values.
Early Life and Background
Byron Lowell Donalds was born and raised in the Crown Heights neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. One of three children, he was raised by his single mother. He is of Jamaican and Panamanian heritage. In 1996, Donalds graduated from Nazareth Regional High School in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. As a young man, he later moved to Florida to pursue higher education.
Donalds attended Florida A&M University before transferring to Florida State University. In 2002, he graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in finance and marketing, the academic foundation that would later support his professional career in banking and financial services.
Path to US Politics
After college, Donalds entered the financial sector, working for several institutions in Florida. In 2010, he left the Democratic Party and joined the Republican Party. He became involved in the Tea Party movement, an experience that drew him into political activism and eventually encouraged him to seek public office.
In 2012, Donalds ran as a candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Florida’s 19th congressional district, finishing fifth out of six candidates in the Republican primary. Although he did not win, the campaign gave him early exposure to organized political work. Early Career (2003-2015)
Byron Donalds began his professional career in 2003 as a credit analyst at TIB Bank. He was promoted to senior credit analyst in 2004, and later advanced to commercial credit manager, assistant vice president, and credit manager. In 2007, he left TIB Bank to take a position as a portfolio manager at CMG Surety LLC.
In 2015, Donalds joined Wells Fargo Advisors as a financial advisor. His years in banking, insurance, and financial services built a strong base of economic expertise that would shape his later policy positions on fiscal issues, banking regulation, and insurance oversight.
Florida House of Representatives (2016-2020)
Donalds was elected to the Florida House of Representatives for District 80 in 2016, beginning his formal career in elected office. During his four-year tenure, he chaired the Insurance and Banking Subcommittee, where he focused on issues related to Florida’s insurance market, financial regulation, and small business lending. He served in the Florida House until 2020, when he stepped down to run for Congress.
U.S. Congress (2021-Present)
In 2020, Donalds won the Republican primary for Florida’s 19th congressional district by 770 votes over state representative Dane Eagle, finishing just over the threshold to avoid a recount. He then defeated Democratic nominee Cindy Banyai in the November general election. Upon being sworn in on January 3, 2021, he became the sixth person to represent the district since its creation in 1983.
During his time in Congress, Donalds has been associated with the Freedom Force, a group of incoming House Republicans focused on opposing socialism and promoting conservative policy. He has served on committees dealing with government operations and the federal workforce, and he has been an active voice on issues including hurricane recovery, water quality in Southwest Florida, nuclear power, and decreased government involvement in health care.

One of the defining moments of Byron Donalds’ congressional career came during the January 2023 Speaker of the House election. On the fourth ballot, he was nominated for Speaker by Chip Roy and received 20 votes, marking the first time two Black lawmakers were simultaneously nominated for Speaker, alongside Democratic nominee Hakeem Jeffries. He was nominated again on subsequent ballots by Lauren Boebert, Scott Perry, Dan Bishop, Andy Biggs, Matt Rosendale, and Anna Paulina Luna. Donalds was also a candidate in the October 2023 Speaker election. In 2024, Donald Trump publicly listed Donalds among those he was considering as a vice-presidential running mate.

Byron Donalds was raised in Brooklyn by his single mother as one of three children. Personal Life
Byron Donalds first met Bisa Hall on the Florida A&M University campus in 1996. They later married on June 15, 1999, and divorced in 2002. Donalds met his future wife, Erika Lees, in the fall of 1999 at Florida State University, and they married on March 15, 2003. Donalds and Lees have three sons and live in Naples, Florida.

In February 2025, Donalds announced his candidacy for governor of Florida in the 2026 election. Days before the announcement, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that Donalds would have his “Complete and Total Endorsement.” The gubernatorial campaign is expected to be a major focus of his public activity heading into 2026.
