James David Vance (born James Donald Bowman; August 2, 1984) is an American politician, author, and attorney serving as the 50th vice president of the United States. A Republican, he represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate from January 2023 until resigning in January 2025 to assume the vice presidency. He is the author of the memoir Hillbilly Elegy and is known for his national conservative and right-wing populist positions.
