Timothy Patrick Sheehy (born November 18, 1985) is an American politician, businessman, aerial firefighter, cattle rancher, and former Navy SEAL officer. He is a member of the Republican Party and has served since 2025 as the junior United States senator from Montana. Sheehy is the youngest Republican U.S. senator and the second-youngest senator in the chamber overall. In 2024, he defeated three-term Democratic incumbent Jon Tester to claim the seat.
Beyond politics, Sheehy built a career in private industry. In 2014, he founded Bridger Aerospace, an aerial firefighting and wildfire management company headquartered in Montana, and in 2015 he spun off a drone-jamming subsidiary later sold for hundreds of millions of dollars. He also co-founded a cattle ranching operation, blending his military discipline, business experience, and Montana lifestyle.
Early Life and Background
Timothy Patrick Sheehy was born in Ramsey, Minnesota, in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area, and grew up in a lake house in nearby Shoreview. He came of age in a region shaped by lakes, outdoor recreation, and strong civic institutions, and the rhythms of Minnesota life informed his lifelong interest in hunting, fishing, and land stewardship. Sheehy attended St. Paul Academy, a private preparatory school, graduating in 2004. Sheehy began his career as a naval officer upon graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2008. The company provides services across 24 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. He was the firm’s sole pilot at the outset, flying a single aircraft while helping ranchers track cattle.
In 2015, Sheehy spun off a portion of the business to form Ascent Vision Technologies, a company that develops aerial surveillance and imaging systems specializing in jamming enemy drones. AVT’s technology was used to shoot down an Iranian drone in 2019, and in 2020 the company was acquired by CACI International for $350 million, netting Sheehy $75 million.
In 2020, Sheehy co-founded the Little Belt Cattle Company with Greg Putnam, another former Navy SEAL. The nearly 20,000-acre working ranch borders over 500,000 acres of national forest and manages its own supply chain of sustainably raised Montana beef.
