David Corenswet Prefers Playing a Star Wars X-Wing Pilot Over Superman Sequel Role

David Corenswet, currently the lead actor portraying Superman in the DC Universe, revealed a surprising preference when asked whether he would rather continue as Superman in potential sequels or take on a role in the Star Wars franchise. During a promotional event featuring a lie detector test alongside co-star Nicholas Hoult for Vanity Fair, Corenswet openly stated he would choose to play a Jedi Knight from Star Wars instead of reprising his Man of Steel role. The polygraph confirmed his honesty in this answer. He also explained a particular Star Wars character he dreams of playing.

Corenswet’s Dream Role as a Star Wars X-Wing Pilot

When prompted about his choice, Corenswet joked,

“In the end, as many things do, it came down to the money. I’m already under contract for a [Superman] sequel, but I’d be fresh negotiating for Star Wars,”

showcasing a lighthearted side to the tough decision. He described his ideal Star Wars role:

“My dream role would be to play an X-wing pilot in a Star Wars film. A Jedi was my childhood dream, but now since I’m into aviation, sitting in an X-wing cockpit … first of all, great way to shoot a movie. You’re just sitting there. You don’t have to learn any choreography, you’re just [mimics flying an X-wing in space].”

This highlighted his personal growth from aspiring Jedi as a child to an adult fascinated by aviation, making the X-wing pilot role more appealing than the complex physical demands of playing a Jedi.

Superman’s Debut and DC Universe Plans

Directed by James Gunn, the recently released Superman movie marked the first official theatrical entry in the new DC Universe, initiating what DC Studios plans as a decade-long storyline. The film was both a critical and commercial hit, earning $125 million domestically in its opening weekend. Although a Superman sequel is anticipated, no official announcement has been made yet. Gunn has hinted that the follow-up might deviate from a traditional sequel format. Meanwhile, other DCU projects such as Supergirl and Clayface are scheduled to premiere next year.

Expanding Star Wars Projects and Opportunities

The Star Wars franchise has been relatively quiet on the big screen recently but is preparing a strong comeback. Next summer will feature The Mandalorian & Grogu, a continuation of the popular Disney+ series. Additionally, the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, is slated for a May 2027 release, with production set to begin later this year.

Given the title Starfighter, this film appears to focus on fighter pilots, presenting an ideal opportunity for David Corenswet to pursue his role as an X-wing pilot. The film’s plot is largely undisclosed, but it’s reasonable to expect prominent roles for pilots. Corenswet’s rising profile after Superman makes him a strong candidate to join the cast, possibly even in a cameo or supporting capacity. The Star Wars franchise has a history of featuring well-known actors in brief roles, such as Daniel Craig‘s stormtrooper cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Corenswet could feasibly film a few scenes without extensive scheduling conflicts, especially as a Superman sequel is not currently in production.

Balancing Commitments and Future Prospects

While Corenswet is contractually committed to at least one Superman sequel, he retains some freedom in selecting projects between appearances in the DC Universe. However, DC Studios would likely intervene if he seriously contemplated departing the Superman role for another franchise, potentially offering a higher salary to secure his return. Critics and fans alike praised Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman, considering it a standout element of the film due to his authentic embodiment of the character’s essence.

His ongoing involvement with Superman is viewed as essential to DC’s success, especially after the film’s positive reception. With the momentum generated by Superman, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery are expected to accelerate future projects in the franchise to maintain audience interest while the excitement is high.
