Freddie Prinze Jr. Almost Lost His Iconic ‘Friends’ Manny Role to Tom Hanks—Here’s What Happened

Actor Freddie Prinze Jr. shared an engaging story about how he came to play Sandy, the manny, on the hit sitcom Friends. During an interview with Men’s Health, Prinze Jr. revealed that the role was nearly given to Tom Hanks before fate intervened. At the time, Hanks was scheduled to take the part but was unable to make it due to a canceled flight in Europe.

With the role suddenly available, the production team contacted Prinze Jr. on short notice.

“They called me and said, ‘Hey, would you want to be on Friends? I said, ‘Yeah, that would be great.’ And they said, ‘Cool. It starts tomorrow.’”

With very little time to prepare, Prinze Jr. stepped into the role quickly, making a memorable impression on the show’s audience.

Learning the Recorder for a Memorable Scene

One of the key moments for Prinze Jr.’s character involved playing the recorder, a skill he initially did not have. He recalled being asked if he knew how to play it and laughing,

“No, who knows how to play the recorder outside of the third grade?”

He was then told he needed to learn, and he did just that. Prinze Jr. explained,

“I actually learned how to play that song, and it’s really me playing,”

referring to the scene where Sandy performs Greensleeves for baby Emma, the daughter of Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston).

Adding to the challenge, no prerecorded music was used during filming. The stress was to play the song perfectly on camera. Prinze Jr. appreciated the support from his co-star, recalling,

“David Schwimmer came in and he was like, ‘You’re gonna love this. It’s like doing a two act play. The crowd gives you so much energy. Use it, let them be a part of the show.’ And it really helped relax me and make the whole experience just awesome and great. So so big thank you to Mr. Schwimmer.”
