Star Wars: Skeleton Crew arrived faster than the Millennium Falcon making the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. However, like all good things, it eventually came to an end. One of the many highlights of the show was Jude Law, who portrayed the charismatic space pirate Jod Na Nawood. Prior to the series’ release, it was speculated that Law would play a Jedi, but while his character is proficient in using the Force, he quickly establishes that he is no Jedi.
At a recent panel at MEGACon Orlando, Collider’s Maggie Lovitt asked Jude Law how much lightsaber training he had to prepare for his role. His response was surprising: “Honestly, we kind of liked the idea that he had no lightsaber training. So, we consciously decided to do nothing. I’ve done stuff in the past with swords, knives, cutlasses, and all that, fencing, so I’ve used similar before. And they would do wonderful enhancements on the set, so whenever the lightsaber came out, and it was lit, you’d get to [mimics lightsaber ignition sound].”
The decision not to have Law undergo lightsaber training to emphasize his character’s unfamiliarity with the weapon is a brilliant creative choice. Often, Star Wars tends to categorize Force users as either righteous Jedi Knights or former Jedi corrupted by the dark side. However, Jod embodies the gray area that exists; he represents the myriad of Force users across the galaxy who may never have been discovered by the Jedi or influenced by the Sith, but instead utilize their powers for everyday advantages.
Throughout Season 1, Jod proves to be the exact type of villain that Skeleton Crew needs. He is nothing more than a space pirate who happens to be in tune with the Force, and this unusual portrayal adds freshness to the familiar Star Wars narrative.
If viewers are curious about what’s next for Jude Law after enjoying his performance in Skeleton Crew, they won’t have to wait long. He will star alongside Jason Bateman in Black Rabbit, an upcoming series about the owner of a New York City hotspot who allows his troublesome brother back into his life. Although the show does not yet have an official release date, it is anticipated to premiere in 2025. Additionally, Law will portray Vladimir Putin in The Wizard of the Kremlin, a political thriller featuring Paul Dano and Jeffrey Wright.
