Keanu Reeves, renowned for his status as a genuinely well-regarded figure in Hollywood, is now showing strong enthusiasm for animation projects. Known primarily for his action-packed roles in franchises like John Wick and The Matrix, Reeves has expanded his interests by expressing a desire to be involved in the acclaimed animated anthology series Love, Death and Robots. This new direction reflects his ongoing passion for science fiction and fantasy storytelling, which has long been a part of his creative pursuits.
From Action Star to Animation Enthusiast
While Reeves has built his career around iconic action films such as Speed, Point Break, and the John Wick series, his fascination with sci-fi works is well documented. Beyond movies, he has contributed to the comic book world as a co-writer of BRZRKR and worked on associated spin-off novels. He also lent his voice to the video game Cyberpunk 2077. This combination of interests highlights Reeves’ broad engagement with imaginative genres beyond live-action roles.
Keanu’s Request to Join Love, Death and Robots
Reeves directly contacted Tim Miller, creator and showrunner of Love, Death and Robots, after previously guest-starring on Miller’s anthology Secret Level. Expressing his admiration for animation, Reeves made a straightforward plea to be involved in Love, Death and Robots. Miller recalls the actor approaching him with genuine excitement about the medium and eagerness to participate in the show.
“He is a huge animation fan, and he came down to Blurto talk to me about a movie, another movie entirely and said, ‘What I really want to talk about is Love, Death and Robots, can you tell me all about it? I love animation’,”
Miller stated.
“I said, ‘Well, we’re doing this other thing. Would you want to be in it?’ And he said, ‘Fuck yeah’. I said, ‘Do you have anything in particular you want to play?’ And he’s like, ‘No, just put me in coach’, essentially.”
Surprising Animation Enthusiasm Impresses Creators
Miller was so surprised by Reeves’ enthusiasm that he had to confirm the story with his creative partner, Dave Wilson, to ensure its authenticity. When he asked Wilson about which character Reeves might play, Wilson initially thought it was a joke.
“I asked Dave, ‘If you were to cast Keanu Reeves in the show, what character would he be?’”
Miller shared.
“At first, Dave thought I was joking that Keanu Reeves wanted to be in the show.”
Recent Voice Roles Showcase Reeves’ Versatility
Reeves’ growing involvement in animation is evident from his recent voice work. He portrayed a comedic version of Batman in DC League of Super Pets and received positive reviews for voicing Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. These roles demonstrate his willingness to explore different facets of performance, particularly in animated settings that allow for creative freedom beyond his typical on-screen persona.
The Significance of This New Direction
At 61 years old, Reeves faces natural limits in pursuing more physically demanding sequels to franchises like The Matrix and John Wick. Turning to animation offers him the chance to remain active in storytelling within genres he loves, but with less physical strain. This shift not only broadens his artistic portfolio but also enables him to engage with passion projects that align with his personal interests.
