Elijah Wood Reveals Famous LOTR Scene Almost Didn’t Happen

Elijah Wood, known for his iconic role in the Lord of the Rings franchise, recently revealed that one of Frodo’s most memorable lines nearly never made it into the films. Speaking at a Fan Expo Portland panel, Wood shared that the famous line

“All right then, keep your secrets,”

which Frodo says to Gandalf, was actually filmed during pickup shoots rather than the main production.

The Unexpected Origin of a Key Lord of the Rings Moment

During the Q&A session, Wood explained that this particular scene was not part of the principal photography schedule.

“That scene was actually shot during pickups,”

Wood confirmed to a Collider reporter moderating the discussion. He further clarified,

“It was not shot during principal photography,”

adding,

“I’m pretty sure that sequence was from pickups.”

This line, delivered by Frodo to Gandalf (portrayed by Ian McKellen), survived the editing process and was included in 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, which launched Peter Jackson’s celebrated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel. The pickup shoot origins behind such a significant moment reveal how some crucial pieces of the film were completed under unexpected circumstances.

Wood also reflected on the demanding nature of these later shoots. He described how various cast and crew handled the tough schedules, especially those requiring heavy makeup and prosthetics.

“Obviously, the folks who had a lot of makeup had the earliest pickup times,”

Wood noted. He mentioned the character Lurtz, an Uruk-hai, whose scenes were filmed around midnight, requiring five or six hours of makeup preparation.

Wood recounted his own experience during the early pickup shoots in the city of Osgiliath, which began as early as 3:30 a.m., calling it “brutal.” These challenging conditions highlight the dedication and persistence of the cast and crew in bringing the ambitious films to life.

The Trilogy’s Legacy and Cast Reflections

Elijah Wood starred alongside a talented ensemble, including Ian McKellen, Dominic Monaghan, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Cate Blanchett, and Orlando Bloom. The trilogy continued with The Two Towers in 2002 and The Return of the King in 2003, both critical and commercial successes.

At the 2025 Texas Film Awards, Wood disclosed that despite the franchise earning a staggering $2.9 billion worldwide, the cast did not secure substantial payouts.

“Because we weren’t making one movie and then renegotiating a contract for the next, it wasn’t the sort of lucrative scenario that you could sort of rest easy for the rest of your life,”

he told Business Insider.

He added,

“The benefit of that was that we were also signing up for something that was going to be a part of our lives forever,”

highlighting the enduring impact of the films on the actors’ careers and personal lives.

Upcoming Projects and Returning Characters

The Lord of the Rings universe continues to expand, with new projects underway. One such continuation, The Hunt for Gollum, is set to be directed by Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum in the original trilogy.

McKellen recently hinted at his and Wood’s return to their roles as Gandalf and Frodo respectively in a film scheduled for release in 2027.

“There’s a character in the movie called Frodo and there’s another character called Gandalf,”

McKellen said at a 2025 fan event.

“Apart from that, my lips are sealed.”

This news has stirred excitement among fans eager to see the beloved characters reprised by their original actors, further cementing the lasting appeal of Tolkien’s world on screen.
