Chris Pratt Locked in Executioner’s Chair for New Thriller Role

Chris Pratt underwent a demanding physical challenge during the filming of his latest movie, Mercy, by remaining strapped to an executioner’s chair for long stretches at his own insistence. The 46-year-old actor leads the futuristic sci-fi thriller directed by Timur Bekmambetov, playing a detective held captive and judged by an advanced AI to prove his innocence in his wife’s homicide. Co-stars in the film include Rebecca Ferguson and Kali Reis.

In a recent BBC interview, Pratt shared that since he had

“never played a character like this before, in a genre like this,”

he requested the intense confinement to create a believable performance.

Commitment to Authentic Depiction of Captivity

To genuinely capture the experience of a prisoner trapped under constant scrutiny, Pratt asked to be locked in the executioner’s chair for sessions lasting up to 50 minutes. His aim was to embody the physical and psychological constraints of the role.

He explained,

“I thought this would help lend itself to the performance, and feelings of claustrophobia and being trapped,”

adding,

“I was sweating, so if my face itched, I couldn’t scratch it, and I couldn’t get up.”

Pratt further stated his eagerness for new artistic challenges, noting,

“I’m always eager to try new things, to be challenged in different ways, and maybe give audiences something they might not expect from me,”

and acknowledged the serious tone of this role by saying,

“I couldn’t rely on the thing I like to bring to roles — where I’m a little bit goofy and guileless. This is serious.”

A Shift from Comedy to Intense Thriller

Set to debut in theaters this Friday, Mercy marks a notable change in Pratt’s acting career. Known predominantly for his comedic success in Parks and Recreation and family-friendly franchises such as The Guardians of the Galaxy and The Super Mario Bros., this new role presents a darker, more intense character. His recent portrayal is crucial in broadening his range beyond lighthearted or humorous parts.

Glen Powell, who appeared alongside Pratt in Top Gun, praised his impact on Hollywood’s perception of leading men. Powell told GQ that Pratt’s enjoyable, witty character Peter, also known as Star-Lord, in The Guardians of the Galaxy opened doors for more varied male roles that aren’t always brooding or serious, like those played by actors such as Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson.

Powell remarked,

“When Pratt kind of appeared on the scene where he was doing things that were a little more silly and buoyant, that’s where I feel most at home,”

adding,

“And that’s where I feel like I had a gear that is a necessary flavor in terms of Hollywood, and not a gear that a lot of guys can play.”

Significance of Pratt’s New Role in “Mercy”

Chris Pratt’s dedication to authentically portraying a captive under intense conditions highlights his desire to expand his acting repertoire. His willingness to endure physical discomfort by being locked in an executioner’s chair demonstrates a serious commitment to the demanding narrative of Mercy. This film could represent a turning point, potentially reshaping Pratt’s career path and influencing Hollywood’s casting landscape for versatile male leads.

As Mercy premieres, audiences and industry watchers alike will be observing how this bold performance may alter expectations for roles Pratt and his peers will pursue in the future.
