Recently unsealed internal documents have disclosed that Blake Lively faced harsh criticism from Sony Pictures Entertainment executives amid the ongoing Blake Lively Sony controversy. The source of tension centered around her public allegations against Justin Baldoni, the director and star of the film It Ends With Us, which Sony leaders believed undermined the movie’s success.
Senior Sony officials, including Sanford Panitch, executive vice president and president of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, cast doubt on Lively’s future in the industry during private conversations. Panitch notably compared Lively’s situation to that of Anne Hathaway, referencing a similar career hardship Hathaway endured.
Internal Emails Reveal Harsh Judgments and Doubts
In the internal correspondence dated August 2024, executives expressed severe disappointment with Lively’s choices, especially the timing of her haircare brand launch, which was described as “epic-level stupid.” Panitch wrote that despite warnings, she “wouldn’t listen” and “knows better.”
“It’s quite ironic because she has a huge hit movie headed to $300M-plus. And probably will never work again, or not for a while. Although even Hathaway recovered. Tom thinks she’s probably and bizarrely unhirable right now,”
Panitch wrote in one email.
While some executives believed the controversy would pass, Panitch disagreed, insisting,
“No. Disagree. She is done for. At least for a while. It’s cooked.”
Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, joined the critical chorus in an August 9, 2024 email, describing the situation as catastrophic. He explained,
“None of the who or right or wrong matters at all. The mess is the story now and it will define the film. No one can watch the film the same way. Tragic.”
Legal Response and Upcoming Trial
Blake Lively’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, addressed the unveiled communications with confidence in his client’s position, stating that the evidence does not legally support the claims made against Lively or the other parties involved. Freedman said,
“As stated all along, and reflected in our clients’ motions, as well as in messages from Sony discussing Ms. Lively’s behaviors, the evidence does not support the claims as a matter of law. A simple read of the newly released message exchanges make the truth abundantly clear. We remain confident in the legal process and clearing the names of all of the Justin Baldoni parties.”
The legal battle between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni is set to move forward with the trial scheduled to begin on May 18.
Implications for Blake Lively’s Career and the Film Industry
The leaked assessment from Sony executives paints a fraught picture for Blake Lively’s career, suggesting that the controversy has impaired her reputation in Hollywood significantly. This internal discord at Sony amid the dispute may influence public perception of It Ends With Us and Lively’s industry relationships going forward. With the trial looming, the outcomes could further impact her standing and highlight ongoing tensions between studio leadership and talent involved in high-profile disputes.
