James Gunn Just Released the Full Superman Screenplay

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, has made the entire 132-page screenplay for the upcoming Superman film publicly available. On January 20, 2026, Gunn posted the script on X, formerly known as Twitter, writing,

“For your enjoyment, the Superman screenplay.”

This release offers fans and industry insiders an in-depth look at the film that launches the new DC Universe.

Superman: A Fresh Start for DC Studios’ Cinematic Universe

The Superman movie, written and directed by James Gunn, is the flagship title for the rebooted DC Universe (DCU), distinct from previous films of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film blends action, humor, and emotional depth to reintroduce one of the most enduring comic book characters on screen.

The cast includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as villain Lex Luthor. Since its release in India on July 11, 2025, the film has garnered significant success, grossing ₹49.79 crore net and setting a record for the biggest opening weekend for a DC film in the Indian market. Globally, Superman has earned $616 million, marking it as a major box office hit.

Critical Reception and Future Plans for the DC Universe

Critical response to the film has been positive, with one review highlighting the film’s ability to

“bring the optimism and sincerity that the character sorely needed on screen.”

Superman is now available across multiple digital platforms, allowing wider access beyond theaters.

Looking ahead, David Corenswet will reprise his role in the sequel, Man of Tomorrow, which begins filming in April 2026. This follow-up will reintroduce Superman and Lex Luthor as they confront an even greater threat featuring Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac. Man of Tomorrow is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.

The broader 2026 slate for DC Studios also includes anticipated films such as Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface, further expanding the new universe under Gunn’s leadership.
