Keke Palmer Shines in The ‘Burbs—See Exclusive Photos

Keke Palmer stars in Peacock’s upcoming series The ‘Burbs, a fresh take on the 1989 Tom Hanks film about a group of neighbors growing suspicious of a strange new family in their suburban town. Premiering February 8, the show explores unsettling events in Hinkley Hills, where Palmer’s character, Samira Fisher, grows increasingly wary of what her neighbors might be hiding.

An Intriguing New Chapter for Suburban Suspense

The ‘Burbs transports viewers to a deceptively calm neighborhood where tensions simmer beneath the surface. Samira Fisher and her husband Rob, played by Jack Whitehall, relocate to his childhood community to raise their newborn son away from city life, but it quickly becomes clear that the suburbs hold more secrets than expected. Palmer highlights the layered storytelling, explaining,

“You think s— is going on in the city, but wait till you see the arcs of the lineage of a suburb that’s been going on for 20-plus years.”

This modern adaptation dives into the eerie and comedic elements of suburbia, weaving a narrative filled with suspense, humor, and social insight. Alongside Palmer and Whitehall, the cast features Paula Pell and Julia Duffy, with Celeste Hughey, known for Palm Royale and High Fidelity, serving as showrunner and creator.

What Drew Palmer to Samira Fisher’s Role

Keke Palmer was immediately captivated by the pilot’s script, eager to explore this complex character. Reflecting on her reaction, Palmer stated,

“I was like, ‘Give me more! Where does this go? I have questions!’ It kept making me lean in.”

Samira’s role offers Palmer the chance to unravel layers of mystery while embodying a relatable woman navigating motherhood and a new environment.

Mixing Comedy, Suspense, and Reality

The show’s unique genre blend attracted Palmer, who appreciated how it balances humor with more serious themes. She described The ‘Burbs as being “funny, but it’s also real,” capturing both the absurdity and authenticity of suburban life.

The Life and Mindset of Samira Fisher

As a lawyer currently on maternity leave, Samira is experiencing a personal journey that plays into the storyline’s mystery. Palmer invites the audience to consider how her character’s investigative instincts intertwine with her identity as a mother seeking independence. She explains,

“How much of that plays into her going on this search to try to figure out what is happening in the neighborhood? How much of this is tying into her being a mother and trying to find her independence and latch onto the things that made her feel like herself, so now her next little thing that she is going to do is solve the mystery in the neighborhood?”

The Complexities of Being New in Town

Portraying the internal and external challenges Samira faces, Palmer captures the emotional layers involved when no one believes her suspicions.

“It’s ‘Black girl in the new neighborhood,’ it’s postpartum, and it’s ‘Something really is going on here and nobody believes me, so now I’m gaslit and I don’t know what I’m doing,’”

she said, acknowledging the tension between self-doubt and determination in her character’s arc.

Addressing Race with Nuance and Authenticity

Both Palmer and Hughey emphasized the importance of representing Samira’s experience honestly while avoiding simplistic stereotypes. “We were constantly developing it,” Palmer noted about shaping the character as a Black woman in a predominantly white suburb. She shared,

“It was always in the back of my mind to make sure that I’m representing this nuanced person, careful with the tropes, but also leaning into the humor where it makes sense.”

Creator Celeste Hughey’s Vision and Casting Insights

Celeste Hughey, the showrunner, explained why Palmer was the perfect choice to lead this project, stating,

“Keke was always, in my heart, the person who should star in this show.”

Hughey compared Palmer’s range to that of Tom Hanks, describing her as “charismatic and undeniable” with both comedic and dramatic talents.

“I think still carries the torch of the original movie, but she can make it all her own. She’s a unicorn,”

Hughey added.

Palmer’s Diverse Career and Public Persona

Over her 20-plus years in entertainment, Palmer has worn many hats, from acting to hosting and authoring books. She is widely known as the Emmy-winning host of the game show Password, which fans often recognize her for. Palmer addressed her evolving career, emphasizing her multifaceted brand:

“People on the streets will say, ‘I love you on Password’ or ‘I love your Instagram page.’ I’m moving into a stage now where the hope and the desire is that people understand that when I say it’s ‘a brand,’ I really mean that it’s a brand — and that one of the functions is acting, and that that was always how it was,”

she said.

“But so is community leadership. So is hosting, and being a personality, and being curious and having deep conversations. As is wellness and lifestyle. Sometimes it can seem like a lot, and people don’t know where to look, but I think it’s important. These last couple of years have been a big part of the conversation that I’ve been having with my audience, and what I’ve been building with my company. It’s an exciting shift.”

Costars Praise Palmer’s Talent and Energy

Palmer’s fellow cast members have expressed admiration for her professionalism and charm. Paula Pell, who plays Dana—the neighbor and former Marine—highlighted Palmer’s versatility:

“Keke is such an amazing actor, and just a charismatic spirit and is hilarious — but also can get weighty when she needs to.”

Pell added,

“I was extremely in love with her by the end, as we all were. She was just pure light.”

Looking Ahead to The ‘Burbs’ Impact

Featuring Keke Palmer’s powerful lead performance, the show also brings fresh perspectives on community, motherhood, and identity. Launching on Peacock on February 8, this series is poised to engage viewers eager for dark comedy that entertains while provoking thought about what lurks beneath the surface of everyday neighborhoods.
