Oakland native Ryan Coogler’s latest film, Sinners, made history with a record-breaking 16 Oscar nominations, including a nod for Best Director. The announcement, made in early 2026, brought widespread excitement both within the film community and in Coogler’s hometown of Oakland, California, as the record marks an unprecedented milestone in Academy Awards history.
A Local Celebration of Coogler’s Success
Coogler, already renowned for directing major projects such as Marvel’s Black Panther and Fruitvale Station, where he depicted the tragic story of Oscar Grant, an unarmed man shot by police in 2009, has inspired immense local pride. Allen Michaan, owner of the Grand Lake Theatre in Oakland, highlighted the significance of the 16 nominations.
Sixteen nominations is the most ever for any film ever in the history of Academy,
said Michaan.
So it is a record. So, of course it’s got to be thrilling for Ryan, for the whole film community here in Oakland.
Michaan also expressed hope for Coogler’s ultimate success at the awards, sharing,
I want to see Ryan just win them all,
followed by That would be wonderful.
Grand Lake Theatre’s Tribute and Revival Screenings
In acknowledgment of the Oscar nominations, the Grand Lake Theatre announced plans to showcase Sinners once again. The film will be available digitally throughout the coming week, followed by a special screening projected in 70 mm format, offering audiences a rare viewing experience. This programming celebrates both the film’s critical acclaim and Coogler’s rise as a key figure in cinema.

Early Mentorship and Coogler’s Educational Path
Coogler’s journey into filmmaking was sparked during his college years at Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga. Rosemary Graham, one of his professors, first recognized his talent when he arrived as a freshman student on a football scholarship. She recalled encouraging him to pursue screenwriting rather than his tentative initial plan to major in chemistry.
He was at St. Mary’s to play football,
Graham said.
He had a football scholarship. He was a very skilled athlete. And I sort of said, ‘What are you planning to study? He was thinking about a chemistry major at the time. And I said, ‘Well, I think you should go to Hollywood and write screenplays.’
This advice left a lasting impact, and Coogler followed it with formative courses in the college’s Creative Writing program, honing the distinctive narrative voice that now defines his work.
Recognition from Academia and Personal Connections
Recently, Graham traveled to the East Coast where she attended the National Board of Review Gala alongside Coogler and his wife, Zinzi, who produced Sinners. During the event, Coogler invited Graham to stand and receive applause, acknowledging her mentorship in front of an esteemed audience. Graham commented on the rarity of such moments for educators.
He gave an acceptance speech, and he told the story about how we met, and he asked me to stand up, and I got applauded at the awards ceremony,
Graham shared.
College professors — we don’t walk the red carpet often. We don’t go to awards ceremonies.
Roger J. Thompson, EdD, president of Saint Mary’s College of California, issued a statement expressing pride in Coogler’s accomplishments while highlighting Graham’s role. He said,
We celebrate Ryan’s continued success and the craft, courage, and heart he brings to his films,
and added,
Professor Rosemary Graham’s steadfast mentorship reflects our mission-educating the whole person and walking alongside students as they discover their gifts.
Other Bay Area Talent Among Oscar Nominees
Alongside Coogler, the Bay Area’s artistic community received multiple Oscar nominations for contributions to Sinners. Delroy Lindo, an Oakland resident, earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role as Delta Slim in the film. Additionally, Grammy-winning Oakland singer-songwriter Raphael Saadiq secured a Best Original Song nomination for “I Lied to You.” Saadiq’s connection to Oakland runs deep, having attended Castlemont High School and participated in its acclaimed choir program, the Castleers.
Keenan Foster, a music teacher at Castlemont and former classmate of Saadiq, reflected on their shared musical roots and Saadiq’s exceptional talent recognized from a young age. Foster remarked,
We go way back musically, and I always knew before he even started singing he was something special. So, I knew in high school he was going to be a force to reckon with. I am now trying to bring the Castleers back to the forefront,
Foster said.
The Wider Impact and What to Expect Next
The record-setting Oscar nominations for Sinners mark a critical moment in film history and shine a spotlight on the accomplishments of artists rooted in the Bay Area, bringing attention to underrepresented voices. Ryan Coogler Oscar nominations not only celebrate his artistic excellence but also inspire local communities and aspiring creatives. As the awards ceremony approaches, anticipation builds around how many awards Sinners will claim, potentially reshaping conversations about diversity and storytelling in Hollywood for years to come.
