Katherine Jenkins revealed that during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee concert in June 2022, actor Tom Cruise mistakenly believed she was a member of the Royal Family. The Welsh mezzo-soprano recounted the awkward situation backstage where military personnel, escorting Cruise, body-slammed him against a wall to clear a narrow corridor as Jenkins navigated the space in a large gown.
The incident took place at Sandringham Royal Parkland, where Jenkins performed in front of thousands. Wearing a striking red Cinderella-style ball gown, she faced challenges moving through confined backstage corridors. This attire contributed to the cramped conditions just after her performance.
Details of the Backstage Encounter and Military Etiquette
Jenkins explained how the military personnel, familiar with her due to her frequent collaborations with them, showed respect by addressing her with a royal greeting.
“As I was getting ready to go out on stage, Tom was walking off, being escorted on either side by military personnel. Because I do so much with the military, they knew me. They both bowed their heads and said good evening ma’am at which point, because there wasn’t space, one of them pushed Tom out of my way and almost body-slammed him against the wall,”
she said.
Later, when Jenkins and Cruise met backstage, the actor gave her a peculiar handshake combined with a nod and bow, which she interpreted as confusion about her identity.
“After the performance, when we did meet, he gave me a very strange handshake/nod/bow thing. Maybe he’d got confused and thought I was a royal?”
Jenkins shared in an interview with The Telegraph.
Katherine Jenkins Reflects on Performing for the Queen
Performing at the event was a significant moment for Jenkins, who described the experience as both a great honour and a source of nerves. She emphasized the importance of delivering her best when singing in front of Her Majesty, saying it never becomes routine no matter how many times she performs or meets the Queen. Jenkins stated,

“Singing for her means you really need to bring out your best performance. It doesn’t matter how many times I perform for her or meet her, whether it’s in front of thousands or just at a small dinner, I will never be blasé about it. It’s a huge honour and lovely to be asked.”
Ahead of the event, Jenkins took to Instagram to express her excitement, writing,
“What a huge honour to sing here at Sandringham on this historic weekend. Tonight was the stuff of dreams – an incredible audience all united in love & celebration for Her Majesty! I will remember this as long as I live. Thank you for having me.”
Katherine Jenkins’ Recent Projects and Tribute to Luciano Pavarotti
Beyond the Jubilee, Jenkins has been involved in other significant classical music projects. She recently contributed to a special tribute on Magic Classical radio celebrating the 90th birthday of the legendary tenor Luciano Pavarotti. Jenkins also presented a documentary titled Pavarotti at 90 with Katherine Jenkins, which delves into the celebrated tenor’s life and artistic journey. In her interview with Bauer Media, she described the project as deeply personal and inspiring:
“It is such a joy to present this documentary exploring the remarkable journey of Luciano Pavarotti from his humble beginnings, through his years of dedication, to becoming the legendary superstar we all know and love.”
She added,
“For me, Pavarotti was not just an extraordinary tenor, but a lifelong inspiration whose artistry shaped my own career and deepened my passion for music.”
She further remarked on Pavarotti’s lasting impact:
“I have always been in awe of his gift to touch hearts across the world, which is why sharing his story feels profoundly special, as his influence continues to remind us of the true power of song.”
