James Gunn Denies Wonder Woman Role in Man of Tomorrow

The DC Universe is preparing to introduce a new Wonder Woman, but director James Gunn has clarified that she will not appear in the upcoming film Man of Tomorrow, set for release in 2027. Addressing the swirling James Gunn Wonder Woman rumors, Gunn stated that while a female character is being cast for Man of Tomorrow, it is not Wonder Woman.

James Gunn Directly Refutes Wonder Woman Casting Rumors for Man of Tomorrow

James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios at Warner Bros., recently took to social media to dispel speculation about Wonder Woman’s involvement in Man of Tomorrow. Responding to a fan inquiry, Gunn distinctly denied that Wonder Woman will appear in the next Superman film. He remarked,

We are currently casting a female character in MoT. My only guess is scoopers are taking a stab at guessing that’s WW.

In addition, he refuted rumors regarding auditions for Wonder Woman and Batman roles, emphasizing,

No. All these rumors of Batman and Wonder Woman auditions are false.

Though not explicitly ruling out a future Wonder Woman appearance, Gunn made clear that no actress has auditioned for the role within this movie’s production. The female character currently being cast is separate from the Amazonian superhero.

Confirmed Details on Man of Tomorrow’s Cast and Plot Elements

Aside from the mystery female casting, little about Man of Tomorrow has been officially unveiled. Lars Eidinger is confirmed to play the villain Brainiac, while David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult reprise their roles as Superman and Lex Luthor, respectively. The film’s storyline is expected to center on Superman and Lex Luthor teaming up against Brainiac, with other returning cast members from the previous Superman project likely to appear. However, fans should not expect Wonder Woman to be among the confirmed cast for this movie.

Wonder Woman’s Return to the DCU: Next Steps and Future Projects

Though a new Wonder Woman is on the horizon, her debut in the DC Universe will probably not occur in Man of Tomorrow. Last year, Ana Nogueira was reported to be writing the script for an upcoming Wonder Woman film, but details remain sparse and no casting announcements have been made. Gunn has emphasized that greenlighting these projects depends heavily on the quality of the script, suggesting that a search for a new Wonder Woman actress has not yet begun.

It is also confirmed that Gal Gadot will not be returning for Wonder Woman 3. Gadot portrayed Diana Prince in multiple films from 2016 to 2020, including Justice League and prior Wonder Woman solo features. DC Studios, under the leadership of Gunn and co-head Peter Safran, is rebooting the universe, and most major roles from the previous DCEU continuity, known as the Snyderverse, are being recast. This reboot means neither Ben Affleck’s Batman nor Robert Pattinson’s Batman will continue their portrayals within the new DCU framework.

Familiar Faces in New Roles and the Unknown Future of Wonder Woman’s Role

Despite the reboot and recasting, some actors are returning in different roles. Jason Momoa, previously Aquaman, will play Lobo in the upcoming series Supergirl, with recent footage highlighting his new character. While it is uncertain if Gadot might take on a different character in the DC Universe later, the mantle of Wonder Woman will undoubtedly pass to a new actress in the future.

Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to premiere on July 9, 2027, but it seems audiences will have to wait longer to see who will embody Wonder Woman next in the evolving DCU.
