Dustin Hoffman’s Surprising Kindness on New Film Set

Daniel Roher, an Oscar-winning director known for his documentary work, stepped into fiction filmmaking with his debut feature Tuner, premiering at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. His experiences directing documentaries about figures like musician Robbie Robertson, Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, and recent explorations of artificial intelligence prepared him, but working with actors was new territory. Roher described feeling uncertain about actors before starting on Tuner, revealing a mix of fascination and confusion about their craft.

Dustin Hoffman’s Unexpected Warmth on Set

On his first fictional film set, Roher’s initial encounter with Dustin Hoffman was especially memorable. Hoffman, a veteran actor famous for roles like Carl Bernstein in All the President’s Men (1976), treated Roher with surprising respect, almost as if Roher were an established director. Roher recalled,

“He treated me like it was 1968, I was Mike Nichols, he was Dustin Hoffman, I was giving him his big break in ‘The Graduate.’ That reverence and respect,”

highlighting the old-school politeness Hoffman showed, calling him “sir” and “boss.” This deference extended to the entire crew, signaling Hoffman’s genuine love for filmmaking and collaborative spirit.

Hoffman’s dedication was evident as he consistently arrived early and maintained a positive attitude throughout filming. Roher remarked,

“Dustin Hoffman loves movies. He loves making movies, he loves being on set,”

and noted the actor’s willingness to contribute in any way, never refusing a request.

Captain Hook’s Role in Boosting Set Morale

When morale dipped during long shooting days, Hoffman lightened the atmosphere by embodying Captain Hook, a character he voiced in the 1991 film Hook. Roher shared how Hoffman would spontaneously perform the villain’s voice, declaring,

“I hate, I hate, I hate Peter Pan,”

to amuse the cast and crew. This playful interaction provided a joyful break during tense moments, reinforcing Hoffman’s kindness and dedication to the set environment.

Shared Passions and Personal Stories

Beyond his acting, Hoffman revealed a personal connection to music during his discussions with Roher. The actor once aspired to be a jazz musician and often listened to pianist Oscar Peterson as a teenager in Los Angeles. Some anecdotes told in Tuner stem directly from Hoffman’s own life, enriching the film with authentic experiences. Roher expressed his admiration and gratitude for the relationship they formed, stating,

“I love him very much and I’m so grateful that I got to work with him,”

and

“It’s truly a dream come true and I will always cherish our friendship.”

Roher’s Shift from Documentary Success to Fiction

Tuner reflects a new direction for Roher, who previously earned acclaim for his 2022 documentary Navalny, which won the Sundance Film Festival Favorite Award and an Oscar. The fictional film centers on Niki White, a piano prodigy portrayed by Leo Woodall, who struggles with an auditory condition that makes loud sounds unbearable. Unable to perform, Niki works as a piano tuner alongside his uncle Harry Horowitz, played by Hoffman. The story evolves through elements of comedy, thriller, and romance, exploring the character’s resilience and inventive use of his condition.

Roher explained the creative shift by saying,

“This film is very much a reaction to ‘Navalny,’”

and emphasized his desire to break free from being pigeonholed, asserting,

“This idea that I don’t want to be put in a box. I want to be expansive … prove to myself that I could do this.”

Release Plans and Anticipated Reception

Tuner is expected to receive an R rating due to strong language and is set for theatrical release in late May. As Roher makes his mark as a fiction filmmaker, his collaboration with Dustin Hoffman stands out as a highlight of his creative journey, blending the talents of an experienced actor with his fresh, ambitious storytelling approach. The film’s debut at Sundance has already sparked interest, indicating strong potential impact on both audiences and critics alike.
