Despite a prolific film career, his ventures into television were limited and mostly took place early on, featuring appearances in episodes of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and popular western series throughout the 1960s.

Redford’s TV presence, though sporadic, included a standout role in “Nothing in the Dark,” one of the most celebrated episodes of The Twilight Zone. However, a major TV project towards the end of his life never materialized, missing an opportunity to further bridge his career with contemporary audiences on the small screen.
Damon Lindelof’s Vision for Redford in Watchmen
In 2019, Damon Lindelof, co-creator of Lost, spearheaded an HBO adaptation of the iconic comic book Watchmen, praised widely in contrast to Zack Snyder’s less well-received 2009 film version. Lindelof revealed that they attempted to include Redford in the series, envisioning him as a key figure within the show’s narrative.

The original graphic novel makes a clear reference to Redford, listing him as a presidential candidate in its closing scenes. This mirrored the real-life political crossover of actor-turned-politician Ronald Reagan. Lindelof intended to cast Redford as a version of himself who wins the presidency and becomes involved in a dark conspiracy. Unfortunately, this concept never came to fruition, and Redford’s presence remained only a mention rather than an on-screen reality.
Political Engagement and Public Persona
Known as the Sundance Kid off-screen, Robert Redford was highly active in political and social issues, particularly environmentalism, LGBTQ+ rights, and Native American advocacy. His broad political support included endorsing candidates across party lines at times. Notably, Redford once contributed a quote to Donald Trump’s 2015 book Crippled America but later distanced himself as Trump’s ambitions unfolded.
Impact of Redford’s Absence on the Series
The Watchmen series succeeded without Redford’s participation, yet his envisioned role could have added significant depth and historical resonance. Some speculate that involving him directly might have increased the chances of receiving approval from Alan Moore, the original creator—though Moore remained notoriously critical of adaptations regardless. Redford’s absence left a noticeable gap between the show’s cultural ambitions and the reality of its casting choices.
