The producer of Disney’s Hawkeye series and the upcoming Wonder Man show provided a discouraging update on Jeremy Renner’s MCU future. Despite Renner’s previous enthusiasm for reprising his role as Clint Barton, the actor’s return now appears uncertain due to behind-the-scenes challenges and complicated circumstances.
Recent Challenges Affecting Jeremy Renner’s Career
Jeremy Renner has encountered significant hardships over the last three years. On New Year’s Day three years ago, he suffered serious injuries after being struck by a snowplough. More recently, he was involved in a public controversy following abuse allegations made by director and artist Yi Zhou. These events, combined with the shutdown of his official fan app, have contributed to a tumultuous period for the actor.
In addition, Renner openly criticized Disney for what he described as an unsatisfactory offer to return for a second season of Hawkeye, casting further doubt on his continued involvement with Marvel projects. This public dispute initially made hopes for a Jeremy Renner MCU return appear slim.
Producer Comments on the Likelihood of a Second Hawkeye Season
In November last year, Renner expressed his willingness to reprise his role in an interview with Screen Rant, giving fans some hope. However, recent remarks from Hawkeye producer and Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest indicate that progress toward a second season has stalled. Guest told The Direct that Marvel’s scheduling and planning complexities hindered the project’s development.
“There was talk at a certain point about… we did explore creatively what Season 2 of ‘Hawkeye’ might be if we were able to do it,”
Guest stated.
“Unfortunately, the timing didn’t work out in terms of Marvel and all the various pieces that need to come together, but I loved working on ‘Hawkeye.’ I think [Jeremy] Renner and Hailee Steinfeld are so terrific together, and I would love to see more of those two.”
Uncertainty Surrounds Renner’s MCU Future
While Guest attributes the delay mostly to timing issues, speculation persists that Renner’s public disputes and personal controversies may have also played a significant role. For now, there is no clear indication that Renner will return to the MCU in upcoming productions. Although fans might hope to see him appear in Avengers: Secret Wars scheduled for 2027, that possibility currently appears uncertain.
The ongoing difficulties highlight the challenges Renner faces in regaining his position within the Marvel franchise, leaving his fans and the industry watching closely for any future developments.
