Natalie Portman publicly criticized the Academy Awards for overlooking female directors in the 2026 nominations, highlighting ongoing gender disparities in the film industry. Speaking at the Sundance Film Festival while promoting her new movie, The Gallerist, the actress addressed the challenges women face in gaining recognition at the Oscars.
Highlighting the Overlooked Female Filmmakers
Portman pointed out that many outstanding films made by women have been ignored during awards season.
“So many of the best films I saw this year were made by women,”
she stated in an interview with Variety. She emphasized the persistent barriers women encounter in every stage of the filmmaking process.
“You just see the barriers at every level because so many were not recognized at awards time,”
she added, listing several notable films,
“Between Sorry Baby and Left-Handed Girl and Hedda and The Testament of Ann Lee… Extraordinary films this year that I think a lot of people are enjoying and loving, but are not getting the accolades that they deserve.”
Context of This Year’s Best Director Nominees
Among the Best Director nominees for this year’s Oscars, only Chloé Zhao, who directed Hamnet, represents women. The competing directors include Josh Safdie, Paul Thomas Anderson, Joachim Trier, and Ryan Coogler. Portman’s observation highlights the scarcity of female representation in major directing categories at the Academy Awards.
Discussing Industry Challenges Beyond Award Nominations
Portman also reflected on the broader difficulties of filmmaking today, especially for women.
“Even when you pass the barriers of getting your financing, which is harder, getting into festivals, which is harder. Every step of the road is harder, and then you’re out and it’s great, and then it also doesn’t get the attention,”
she said.
“We have a lot of work to do still.”
Despite these obstacles, Portman expressed optimism about collaboration among women in the industry, explaining,
“But joyfully, with a lot of joy, working with each other. It’s a very special process to be in community with women on set.”
Significance of Portman’s Critique and Future Outlook
Portman’s comments draw attention to the ongoing gender imbalance within one of the film industry’s most prestigious awards ceremonies. By spotlighting female filmmakers’ lack of recognition, she underscores the need for greater equity in financing, festival selection, and award acknowledgment. Her remarks may encourage further dialogue and action around inclusivity in Hollywood’s creative and award processes.
