Kiernan Shipka Opens Up on Bold ‘Industry’ Role Scene

Kiernan Shipka has joined the cast of the fourth season of Industry, which began airing on January 11. The 26-year-old actress plays Hayley Clay, a driven assistant working closely with two key characters portrayed by Kit Harington and Max Minghella. Shipka’s role marks a significant step in her career, showing her growth as an actor beyond her previous well-known work.

Transitioning from Child Star to Mature Roles

Having gained fame as a child actress on Mad Men, and later starring in Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Shipka embraced this opportunity as a chance to redefine her public image. The HBO Max series Industry, noted for its adult themes and complex characters, offered her a platform to take on a more mature and challenging part. Her portrayal of Hayley Clay represents a departure from her earlier roles and highlights her evolution as a performer.

Breaking New Ground with a Courageous Scene

In the third episode of the latest season, Shipka’s character appears in a notable threesome scene alongside Harington and Marisa Abela, who plays Yasmine, Harington’s character’s wife on the show. Shipka described this scene as both brave and rule-breaking, fitting with the show’s tendency to push boundaries. She emphasized the importance of this moment for all three characters, as each experiences distinct emotional journeys simultaneously.

“It’s such an important scene for all three characters,”

Shipka told Variety.

“But what I think is so interesting about that scene is that everybody’s got this wildly different emotional arc: You’re doing something together, but everyone is on kind of their own journey.”

Reflecting on Early Fame and Career Growth

Shipka acknowledged the longevity of her career, noting that people have recognized her since she was very young. She expressed awareness of how that early fame influences perceptions today, especially as she takes on more adult roles. The actress shared her enthusiasm about being chosen for Hayley Clay by the show’s casting team, including Julie Harkin and creators Mickey Down and Konrad Kay.

“I mean, I’m 26 now, but people have known me since I was 6.”

“And I’m very aware of what kind of weight that holds. So for them to say, ‘Hey, I think she’s the girl for Hayley,’ is very exciting for me,”

she said.

“It’s a part I love. So I was definitely aware that I was doing something more mature,”

Shipka added.

“But I wasn’t really thinking, ‘I’ve really got to do this sort of thing next.’ It’s about the people and the material.”

The Challenge and Excitement of New Performances

Looking ahead, Shipka reflected on how this new role might alter how audiences view her as an actor. She sees the differences between this part and her earlier work as an exciting challenge that motivates her.

“When it goes up against stuff I’ve done previously, that’s so exciting and so fun.”

Her portrayal of Hayley Clay in Industry signals her continued growth and increasing willingness to take creative risks. As the show progresses, Shipka’s bold performances are likely to shape her future opportunities and help redefine her position in the industry.
