This week, the Opéra de Paris presents a new staging of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, introducing a cast of emerging talents alongside Ralph Fiennes making his opera directing debut. This marks Fiennes’s first time directing for the Paris Opera, an important milestone in his diverse artistic career. The production brings Fiennes’s established acting prowess into the operatic realm, highlighting his fresh vision for this classic work.
Fiennes’s Deep Connection to Eugene Onegin
Fiennes’s familiarity with Eugene Onegin traces back to 1999, when he portrayed the titular character in a film adaptation of the Pushkin tale. His performance was met with critical acclaim; one review praised it as
“refreshing to see the actor work his way into romantic longing instead of existing there from the get-go.”
This early experience gave him a unique perspective on the character and story that now informs his directorial approach.
A Celebrated Acting Career Leading to Opera Direction
Over the past 26 years, Fiennes has appeared in numerous significant films, including Oscar winners like The English Patient, Schindler’s List, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Hurt Locker, and The Constant Gardener. His work has earned him three Academy Award nominations and seven BAFTA nods. Beyond acting, Fiennes has directed three movies, notably The White Crow, a film about the legendary ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, which demonstrated his skill at guiding artistic storytelling—an experience he now applies to his opera direction.
Fiennes Reflects on His Opera Directing Experience
Commenting on his transition into opera, Fiennes shared,
“the experiences of opera that have moved the most is when I have felt deeply touched and moved and taken out of my world by the emotions and the force of music and emotion.”
He also emphasized his long-standing connection to Onegin, signaling the personal significance this production holds for him as he embarks on this new creative path.
Accessing the Performance Beyond Paris
For audiences outside of Paris, the Eugene Onegin production will be accessible through broadcast on France.tv and via the Paris Opera Play platform, allowing wider access to Fiennes’s operatic debut and the talents of the cast.
