Natalie Portman Reveals She ‘Misplaced a Rib’ Filming Black Swan

Natalie Portman, who won an Oscar for her role in the 2010 film Black Swan, revealed on The Drew Barrymore Show that she suffered a significant injury while filming. The actress explained she “misplaced a rib or something” due to the physical demands of portraying Nina Sayers, a ballerina struggling with her mental state. The injury occurred from frequent lifts during dance sequences, making her experience on set particularly challenging.

Intense Preparation and Training for the Role

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan features a cast including Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder, Barbara Hershey, and Vincent Cassel. Portman’s role required not only acting but precise ballet movements. Aronofsky mentioned the “really hard job” Portman faced, underlining the difficulty of performing with exactness before the camera. Consulting with former New York City Ballet dancer Mary Helen Bower, Portman underwent a rigorous training regimen to embody her character authentically.

Bower emphasized the level of dedication Portman showed:

“The idea is, if you’re going to play a ballerina, you’re going to have to train like one,”

she said. Portman’s training sessions were extensive, often lasting five hours daily, six days a week.

According to Bower,

“We’re meeting at 5, 5:30 in the morning, doing ballet for two or three hours. She goes and works a 12-hour day and meets me at the gym at night, and we’re doing our toning exercises and swimming a mile. And then she goes home and goes to sleep and then we get up the next day and do it again. And this is six days a week for months and months and months leading up to the movie.”

Portman’s Continued Success and Voice Work

Portman’s commitment to her craft extends beyond Black Swan. She earned Oscar nominations for leading her role as former first lady Jackie Kennedy in 2016’s Jackie, and for supporting actress in Closer, the 2004 drama by Mike Nichols starring Julia Roberts, Jude Law, and Clive Owen. More recently, she lent her voice to the animated film Arlo, which received a nomination for Best Animated Feature, offering her a less physically demanding role.

The Enduring Impact of Portman’s Dedication

Portman’s experience filming Black Swan highlights the intense discipline and physical endurance required to portray such a demanding character. Her injury and training regimen illustrate the lengths actors go to bring authenticity to their roles. With a legacy that includes critical acclaim and diverse performances, her work continues to resonate in film and beyond.
