Jennifer Grey, best known for her role in the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing, is confirmed to return as Frances “Baby” Houseman in the long-anticipated sequel slated to begin filming in 2026. The announcement comes from The Wrap, revealing that Grey, now 65, will reprise the Golden Globe-nominated character in Dirty Dancing 2, with a screenplay by Kim Rosenstock.
Production Details and Creative Team Behind the Sequel
The sequel has been carefully developed over time, with Grey also joining as an executive producer. In her statement to the outlet, she said,
“I’ve long wondered where we might find Baby years later and what her life might be like, but it’s taken time to assemble the kind of people that I felt could be entrusted to build on the legacy of the original film.”
She added,
“I’m excited to say that it looks like the wait will soon be over!”
Adam Fogelson, chair of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, emphasized the studio’s commitment to the project, highlighting that a “super team” is now working on a
“new theatrical film meant for the big screen.”
The original movie, directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Eleanor Bergstein, is set at Kellerman’s resort in the Catskills, where Baby falls in love with her dance instructor, Johnny, played by Patrick Swayze.
Legacy and Future of the Dirty Dancing Franchise
Since its release, Dirty Dancing has become a cultural touchstone, featuring the Oscar-winning song
“(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,”
which plays during Baby and Johnny’s iconic final dance. However, how the sequel will address Johnny’s character remains uncertain due to Patrick Swayze’s passing in 2009.
The upcoming film follows several franchise adaptations including a brief 1988 CBS TV series, the 2004 film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, a stage version, and a 2017 ABC musical remake that received negative reviews. Nearly four years after Lionsgate first teased the sequel during its Cinemacon presentation in April 2022, where clips from the original were shown alongside a voice-over stating,
“Jennifer Grey returns to Kellerman’s in the next chapter,”
anticipation for the new film continues to build.
Anticipated Impact of the Sequel’s Return
The return of Jennifer Grey to the role of Baby brings renewed attention to a beloved story that has resonated with audiences for decades. With experienced creatives and producers involved, Lionsgate aims to honor the original’s legacy while introducing the story to a new generation. Fans can expect the sequel to explore where Baby’s life has taken her since the original events, providing fresh narrative depth while preserving the essence of the franchise.
