Actor Matt Damon recently shared an insightful experience involving his and Ben Affleck’s failed audition for the 1989 film Dead Poets Society. Both friends attempted to join the cast but were unsuccessful. That same summer, they took summer jobs working at a single-screen movie theatre that was exclusively showing the film directed by Peter Weir, revealing a unique perspective on the movie’s impact and their place in the industry.
Working Behind the Scenes of a Cinematic Classic
Damon described their job duties at the theatre, which included tearing tickets and selling concessions like popcorn, sodas, Junior Mints, and Milk Duds. Despite not landing roles in the film, they witnessed its popularity firsthand.
“For three or four showings a day, it was never not completely at capacity. We tore the tickets, we sold the popcorn and the sodas and the Junior Mints and Milk Duds and told people to enjoy the show,”
Damon said.
The actor recounted how emotionally charged the screenings were, as large groups of audience members often left the theatre with tears and embraced each other.
“Then, we would go in, sweep the theatre up and get ready for the next group that was coming in,”
Damon added, illustrating the bittersweet contrast between their role and the film’s powerful effect on viewers.
Enduring Influence of Dead Poets Society on Damon and Affleck
Damon and Affleck have since introduced the film to their children, who were also moved by its message and performances. Reflecting on the cast, Damon acknowledged the excellent work by actors such as Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard, and Josh Charles.
“It is wonderful. The right actors got the parts. Everyone was great,”
Damon commented on the film’s lasting appeal and quality.
A Tough Yet Valuable Lesson from Early Career Experiences
Damon described this episode as a humbling moment that underscored the highs and lows of working in the entertainment industry.
“It was a good lesson in like.. what’s at stake in this career. There is not really an in-between: You are either in the movie or you are sweeping up..,”
he explained, referencing the divide between success and the work behind the scenes. He emphasized that their experience did not lead to any bitterness toward the cast, including Ethan Hawke, who is currently nominated for Best Actor at both the Oscars and BAFTA Film Awards for his role in Blue Moon.
The Significance of Keeping Perspective in Hollywood
This candid reflection from Matt Damon on the challenges he and Ben Affleck faced early in their careers reveals the unpredictability within acting and filmmaking. It serves as a reminder of the resilience required to succeed and the importance of appreciating the journey, regardless of immediate outcomes. Their story continues to inspire with the knowledge that perseverance and humility are crucial in the competitive world of film.
