Billy Bob Thornton Reveals Why Landman Scenes With Sam Elliott Were Tough

In Season 2 of Landman, the storyline focused heavily on the dynamics between Tommy Norris, played by Billy Bob Thornton, and his father, T.L., portrayed by Sam Elliott. Elliott’s entry into the cast deepened the emotional layers of the show by uncovering T.L.’s complex and painful history, providing a fresh perspective on his relationship with Tommy.

Thornton welcomed Elliott’s involvement enthusiastically, reflecting on their long-standing friendship and professional admiration before Season 2 aired. He stated,

“I’ve known Sam for a long time. We’ve known each other since the ’80s, and to have him there is just a joy for me. He’s been a hero of mine my whole career, and I call him my friend, and he’s a great actor.“

This deep connection between the actors translated into their characters’ evolving interactions throughout the season.

The Challenge Behind Filming Intense Scenes Between Thornton and Elliott

Both Billy Bob Thornton and Sam Elliott have previously worked together in projects like the Western film Tombstone and the series 1883, which shares the same creator, Taylor Sheridan, as Landman. Despite this experience, Thornton revealed that some scenes in Landman were particularly difficult to perform.

The struggle arose not from being starstruck but from the personal connection between the two. Thornton found it emotionally challenging to convey anger and be harsh toward Elliott, who has been a close friend and mentor figure since the 1980s.

“Maybe not every actor is this way, but I can’t help it because I’m so codependent. Some of the hardest stuff I had to do was when I had to be abrupt to, or even mean with, Sam Elliott,”

Thornton shared with Variety.

He further explained the difficulty caused by their friendship:

“Sam and I are old, old friends. He’s been like a pop to me since I’ve known him in the ’80s. Sometimes, knowing the other human, it’s not as easy to just go for it. But you have to. You have to go 100%”

Despite the initial emotional hurdles, Thornton managed to fully embrace his character’s fierce moments with Elliott in Season 2, balancing intense conflicts with meaningful exchanges that enriched their on-screen father-son relationship.
