Chris Pratt Opens Up on Star-Lord’s Infinity War Backlash

Chris Pratt, known for his role as Star-Lord, recently opened up about the backlash he faced following his character’s controversial scene in Avengers: Infinity War. The actor shared insights into how the infamous moment, which sparked widespread debate among fans, affected him personally in the days after the film’s release.

The Controversial Scene and Its Fallout

Avengers: Infinity War featured numerous unforgettable moments, including the Iron Spider suit and the devastating Snap, but none stirred more conversation than Star-Lord’s fateful outburst against Thanos. Chris Pratt’s character interrupted the heroes’ plan by punching Thanos just as the Infinity Gauntlet was about to be removed, ultimately costing them a chance to stop the villain. This moment has since been heavily memed and criticized across online communities.

During an interview with Josh Wilding from ComicBookMovie.com, Pratt revealed that this scene’s impact went beyond internet jokes and actually affected his everyday life. The actor described being confronted by fans in public, who expressed anger over his character’s decision.

“What’s wild about this scene is how much people eviscerated Quill for that moment of human weakness. People genuinely hated the character for a while. On the street, they’d come up to me like, ‘Why’d you do it, man?’ I’m like, ‘I didn’t do anything!’”

“Also, if Quill hadn’t done that, the two movies would’ve been thirty minutes long. ‘We got him.’ Roll credits. That’s not a movie. Looking back, I feel the weight of what that moment did to the character. I’m still glad it happened, but I didn’t realize at the time it would become iconic.”

The Challenges of Portraying Star-Lord in a High-Pressure Role

Pratt acknowledged that his experience portraying Star-Lord in Infinity War differed significantly from his previous outings as the character, especially since this was the first time James Gunn did not direct him. Despite the criticism, he enjoys working with the Russo Brothers and respects their approach to collaboration and character development.

“It’s a mega scene. I look at it differently now than I did going into it. This was very much a supporting part. Between Infinity War and Endgame, I think I worked maybe twenty days total. I was there to support the Avengers cast. I love the Russos. They’re great at letting us collaborate, contribute to the writing, and shape the characters.”

“This was also the first time I played the character without James Gunn directing me. That was noticeable, especially given James’s relationship to Peter Quill. But this wasn’t a Guardians movie, it was an Avengers movie.”

Reevaluating Star-Lord’s Role and Importance

While Star-Lord’s punch is widely regarded as a fatal error in the battle against Thanos, critics often overlook that it was Pratt’s character who devised the original plan. Though his impulse cost the team, the chance to fight Thanos in the first place was thanks to Star-Lord’s leadership and strategic thinking. This complexity adds layers to the criticism Pratt faced, highlighting the character’s flawed humanity.

Avengers: Infinity War continues to be available on Disney Plus, offering fans the opportunity to revisit the film and perhaps see Star-Lord’s decisions in a new light. With ongoing developments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the legacy of this moment and Pratt’s portrayal of the hero will likely remain a topic of discussion.
