Angelina Jolie Visits Gaza Border, Urges Swift Humanitarian Aid

Angelina Jolie, Hollywood actress and former UN Refugee Agency special envoy, visited the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing into Gaza on Friday, engaging with Red Crescent volunteers and truck drivers delivering humanitarian aid amid ongoing conflict. This visit highlights the urgent need for accelerated assistance to Palestinians in Gaza, where aid delivery faces severe obstacles.

Meeting Aid Workers at Rafah Crossing

Accompanied by an American delegation and greeted by former and current officials, Jolie called it an honour to meet the aid workers operating at the Gaza border. During her visit, a Red Crescent volunteer informed her that

“thousands of aid trucks are just waiting”

to enter Gaza, underscoring the bottleneck in humanitarian supplies reaching the region.

Assessing the Situation of Injured and Aid Flow

Reports from local media indicate Jolie’s trip aimed to evaluate the condition of Palestinians injured and transferred to Egyptian facilities, alongside monitoring how aid moves into Gaza’s war-affected areas. Despite the significance of the visit, neither Jolie nor Egyptian authorities have publicly commented on the details or outcomes of her assessment.

Challenges at the Rafah Crossing and International Appeals

The Rafah crossing, slated to reopen as part of the current Gaza ceasefire since October, remains closed, complicating aid deliveries considerably. On Friday, Egypt joined six other countries, including Saudi Arabia, in calling for the international community to pressure Israel to immediately remove restrictions on the import and distribution of essential supplies into Gaza.

Earlier this month, Israel announced plans to open Rafah only for people exiting Gaza; however, Cairo quickly dismissed this, stating it had not approved such a decision. These ongoing disagreements contribute to delays in aid reaching those in desperate need.

Jolie’s Continued Commitment to Humanitarian Issues

After more than two decades as a UN refugee agency special envoy, Angelina Jolie stepped down in 2022 to concentrate on broader humanitarian concerns. Her presence at the Rafah crossing reaffirms her dedication to bringing global attention to critical crises, especially as Gaza faces a mounting humanitarian emergency.

This visit serves as a strong reminder of the pressing need for enhanced international cooperation and support to guarantee timely aid delivery, which remains vital for the survival and well-being of Palestinians amidst ongoing tensions and suffering.
