Sheinelle Jones, the co-host of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, revealed that early in her career she faced pressure to “look more like Halle Berry” and received a request to change the spelling of her first name. These demands come from industry expectations she encountered when starting out in television journalism.
Requests to Modify Name and Hairstyle
Jones recounted that one of her first managers asked her to alter the spelling of her name. According to Jones, the manager wanted her to adopt a spelling resembling the Chanel brand, but she declined the suggestion. She explained,
“I remember my first job in the business — I’m trying to make sure I’m not gonna get them in trouble — one of my managers called me in their office and they said, two things, one your name is Sheinelle, can you please change your spelling? And I was like… no,”
Jones, 47, recalled on January 30.
Beyond the name change, Jones was also encouraged to adjust her hairstyle to mimic Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry. Her manager shared a photo of Berry’s short haircut from that period and urged Jones to adopt a similar look. She said,
“Then the other one was like — full disclosure — ‘We just want you to look more like Halle Berry,’
Jones said of the Oscar-winning actress.
So she showed me this picture of Halle Berry’s haircut, and that’s when she had that short ‘do, and my little chunky face, I was like, no!”
Background and Career Development
Jones grew up in Wichita, Kansas, and gained experience through an internship at a local CBS affiliate while still attending high school. She pursued journalism at Northwestern University and secured her first job in Springfield, Illinois, after graduation. Over time, she advanced to national television and recently became a permanent co-host on the fourth hour of the Today show, which now airs as Today with Jenna & Sheinelle.
Earlier this year, Jones joined Jenna Bush Hager in this new permanent role, solidifying her presence on the program. Reflecting on the close partnership between the co-hosts, Jones said,
“Jenna and I look at each other and we’re safe. If I fall, she’s going to pick me up and vice versa,”
highlighting the emotional support between them.
Personal Challenges and Resilience
Jones faced a profound personal loss when her husband, Uche Ojeh, passed away in May 2025 from glioblastoma. After taking an extended leave from the Today show, she returned in September 2025, determined to find joy amid adversity. She expressed her resolve by stating she was fighting for my joy.
Regarding her late husband’s reaction to her career milestone, Jones shared,
“And I know that he knows. He was rooting for me all along. I owe it to him to keep going.”
Significance of Jones’s Stance and Career Journey
Jones’s decision to resist changing her name and appearance early in her career underscores a broader issue of conformity pressures in the entertainment industry, particularly for women of color. Her experience reflects the challenges many face in maintaining authenticity while navigating professional expectations. By standing firm, Jones has become a role model for embracing individuality amid external demands.
As she continues to flourish on national television, Jones’s story highlights the importance of resilience and self-advocacy, both in the media landscape and beyond.
