Ralph Fiennes Makes Stunning Opera Directing Debut with Eugene Onegin

Actor and director Ralph Fiennes made his opera directing debut this week at the Paris Opera’s Palais Garnier, presenting Eugene Onegin with a striking cinematic approach. Fiennes, a three-time Academy Award nominee and Tony Award winner, used lighting techniques that draw the audience’s focus much like a film director, highlighting key characters while others fade into the background.

Cast, Music, and Production Details

The production is based on Alexander Pushkin’s 1833 novel and set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who co-wrote the libretto with Konstantin Shilovsky. Baritone Boris Pinkhasovich leads as Onegin, soprano Ruzan Mantashyan performs the role of Tatyana, and tenor Bogdan Volkov plays Lensky. The performance run is fully booked through February 27.

Artistic Vision and Leadership

Conductor Semyon Bychkov, recently named music director of the Paris Opera starting August 2028, chose Fiennes for this project. He emphasized the actor’s deep connection to Russian culture in a text message, calling him

“an immense actor and director, with a profound connection to Russian culture.”

Mezzo-soprano Susan Graham noted the director’s focus:

“It became clear that his priorities are quite cinematic, as if everything is kind of in close-up.”

Impact and Future Prospects

Ralph Fiennes’ entry into opera direction marks a notable expansion of his artistic career, bringing a fresh vision to a classic Russian work. With Eugene Onegin’s successful run fully booked, this debut could influence more crossovers between film and opera, potentially attracting new audiences to the art form.
