Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, longtime friends and fellow actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, have teamed up for the first time in a crime thriller titled Crime 101. The film, set for release on February 11, centers on Hemsworth as a jewel thief planning one last heist, while Ruffalo plays the detective assigned to catch him. Hemsworth shared that despite their close friendship, shifting from their familiar on-screen dynamic to a darker, dramatic genre was challenging during production.
Adjusting to a Dramatic Tone
Known mostly for their comedic interactions, Hemsworth admitted this change was uncomfortable at first.
“This is a dramatic film, so it was quite an adjustment and discomfort at first,”
he told BBC. The actor explained that their long history as friends made it harder to focus, joking that
“The two of us get together and we’re like a couple of naughty kids at school that need to be wrangled to be focused.”
This playful camaraderie contrasts with the serious themes of Crime 101, marking a significant shift for both performers.
Ruffalo Praises Hemsworth’s Performance
Mark Ruffalo expressed pride in Hemsworth’s decision to take on this new type of role. The 58-year-old actor said,
“I got to see him do something I’ve been dying to see him do that I know he can do but hadn’t had the director to help him.”
Ruffalo also remarked on Hemsworth’s transformation on set, noting that he initially did not recognize him, highlighting the actor’s commitment to the dramatic role.
Supporting Cast and Direction
Directed by Bart Layton, Crime 101 also features Monica Barbaro, Barry Keoghan, and Halle Berry. The film’s release marks a notable departure for Hemsworth and Ruffalo, inviting audiences to see a different side of the duo outside their superhero personas within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
