Paul Rudd Nearly Lost Clueless Role Over Haircut Change

Paul Rudd, who starred as Josh in the 1995 film Clueless, came close to losing the role due to a haircut change after his audition. Known for playing the intelligent college student, Rudd’s choice to cut his hair shortly after trying out caused unexpected trouble on set.

Initially, Rudd auditioned with a longer, grunge-style haircut that matched the character’s look. However, he impulsively visited a barbershop and got a buzzcut, altering his appearance significantly right after the audition.

Director’s Reaction and the Risk to His Casting

The impact of Rudd’s new haircut became clear when he encountered Clueless director Amy Heckerling. Her response conveyed serious concern about his hair change affecting his chances for the role.

“I didn’t think about it after I auditioned for it. I was down the street and I walked past a barbershop and said, ‘Just buzz it.’ And they went and cut off all my hair,”

Paul Rudd revealed to Today.

He recalled a tense moment when Heckerling confronted him about the haircut, signaling his potential removal from consideration.

“Then about a week after that, I went to a restaurant and saw Amy Heckling, the director. She said, ‘What did you do to your hair?’ You were in the running for this part. You cut your hair,”

Rudd remembered.

Efforts to Address the Haircut Problem and Outcome

To salvage his chance, Rudd tried wearing a wig during a screen test, though he noted the look was not convincing. Despite the difficulties caused by his impulsive decision, he ultimately secured the role of Josh, which became a landmark in his acting career.

His portrayal was well received and contributed to his continued success, including later fame as the Marvel character Ant-Man.
