John Lithgow has described JK Rowling’s views on transgender rights as “ironic and inexplicable,” addressing the controversy sparked by his casting as Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series. Speaking at the Rotterdam Film Festival after premiering his latest film, Jimpa, the 80-year-old actor expressed his personal frustration over the backlash regarding Rowling’s transviews.
Exploring Rowling’s Role and the New Harry Potter Adaptation
JK Rowling, who serves as an executive producer on the new eight-year HBO adaptation of Harry Potter, has attracted significant attention for her public statements opposing certain transgender rights initiatives. Lithgow highlighted the importance of Rowling’s original Harry Potter stories, praising their widespread impact on audiences of all ages. He noted how the series centers on themes of acceptance, kindness, and the struggle between good and evil.
Although Rowling created the original canon beloved by millions, Lithgow stressed that she is minimally involved in the production of the new series. He emphasized that the team reimagining Harry Potter for television comprises talented individuals he respects and is eager to collaborate with.
Lithgow Expresses Discomfort Over Public Reaction
Lithgow admitted feeling upset by strong opposition to his participation in the series, particularly from those who object because of Rowling’s expressed views on transgender people. He insisted that within the Harry Potter canon, there is no indication of transphobia, and described Dumbledore as a “beautiful role.”

After his casting was announced, Lithgow revealed he had been sent an open letter from a friend with a trans child urging him to abandon the role. He described the decision to proceed as difficult but made deliberately, despite discomfort caused by the call to walk away.
I take the subject extremely seriously,
Lithgow said, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
JK Rowling has created this amazing canon for young people, young kids’ literature that has jumped into the consciousness of society. Young and old people love Harry Potter and the Harry Potter stories. It’s so much about acceptance. It’s about good versus evil. It’s about kindness versus cruelty. It’s deeply felt.
I find it ironic and somewhat inexplicable that Rowling has expressed such views,
he added.
I’ve read about them, and I’ve never met her. She’s not really involved in this production at all. The people who are re-adapting Harry Potter and turning it into an eight-year-long TV series are remarkable. … These are people I really want to work with.
It upsets me when people are vehemently opposed to me having anything to do with this,
Lithgow continued.
But in Potter canon you see no trace of transphobic sensitivity. She has written this meditation of kindness and acceptance. And Dumbledore is a beautiful role.
An open letter to John Lithgow: Please walk away from Harry Potter,
was the message from a friend of Lithgow’s, who has a trans child. Lithgow described this situation in Rotterdam, saying:
It was a hard decision. It made me uncomfortable and unhappy that people insisted I walk away from the job. I chose not to do that.
Audience Reaction and Lithgow’s Commitment
During the Rotterdam event, an audience member also voiced their disappointment in Lithgow’s choice to remain in the series, leaving the room in protest. Lithgow acknowledged being prepared for such disagreement, saying:
I’m perfectly ready for collisions of opinion. I understand it,
demonstrating a willingness to navigate contentious discussions around the series and Rowling’s views.
Lithgow also remarked humorously on his commitment to the long-term project, noting his age and the extensive duration of the show. With the series intended to span nearly a decade, he joked about having to maintain the role of Dumbledore until he is 88.
I’m the oldest person in this entire room, just turned 80. And yet I signed a contract – I will be playing Dumbledore for the next eight years! I absolutely have to keep at it. I felt: ‘Wow! That means I will live to be 88.’ I have that in writing.
Background on JK Rowling’s Transgender Rights Position
JK Rowling’s commentary on transgender rights has drawn widespread criticism and support. In 2020, she published a lengthy online statement opposing proposed changes to gender recognition laws, sharing her personal experiences with sexual assault and domestic violence. She expressed concerns about trans activism and the implications of shared spaces for cisgender women and trans women.
Rowling has financially supported organizations such as For Women Scotland, donating £70,000 to the campaign group central to legal challenges concerning women’s definitions under the law. She also established the JK Rowling Women’s Fund to assist efforts aimed at preserving sex-based rights for women.
Harry Potter Casts’ Responses to Rowling’s Controversial Views
Several actors from the original Harry Potter films have publicly distanced themselves from Rowling’s opinions. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Eddie Redmayne have issued statements that challenge or critique her viewpoints. Similarly, Nick Frost, who portrays Hagrid in the new series, and Paapa Essiedu, cast as Snape, have expressed dissent following their involvement.
Notwithstanding the disagreement, Rowling affirmed in 2022 that she would not remove Essiedu from the production after he signed a petition supporting transgender rights. She wrote:
I don’t have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn’t exercise it if I did. I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.
