Ryan Coogler, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Sinners, has been honored as the 2026 Creative of the Year by Creative Collective NYC, the organization that hosts the CultureCon conference. This recognition highlights Coogler’s role as a major culture influencer whose work spans art, entertainment, social good, and technology.
As the founder of Proximity Media and an Oscar-nominated director, Coogler leads the Creative Collective’s 2026 Creative Class, which celebrates Black culture-shifters pushing boundaries across various industries. His latest film, the period vampire thriller Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan, has achieved both widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, grossing $368 million globally and earning a record 16 Academy Award nominations.

Since its founding by Ellis in Harlem in 2017, Creative Collective NYC has become an influential platform for honoring Black leaders in creativity and culture. Previous honorees include journalist Abby Phillip, Black in Fashion Council co-founders Lindsey Peoples and Sandrine Charles, COVID-19 vaccine scientist Kizzmekia Corbett, fashion pioneer Anifa Mvuemba, and activist Brittany Packnett Cunningham.
The 2026 Creative Class Highlights Emerging Trailblazers
The theme for this year’s class is “the power of process,” featuring 83 innovative Black creatives making waves in their fields. Alongside Coogler, notable members include Miles Caton, the young star and musician from Sinners; Olandria Carthen, known from Love Island USA; and Jay Versace, a prominent music producer and beatmaker.

Other influential changemakers on the roster include Fisayo Longe, founder of Kai Collective; DaShawn Usher, president of community and media at GLAAD and founder of Mobilizing Our Brothers Initiative (MOBI); Kenji Summers, a mindfulness instructor and mind-body coach; content creators Taryn Delanie Smith and Tiffani Charisse; communications leader Alexis Denise Williams, deputy press secretary for culture partnerships and Black media under NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani; and Shaina Rainford, CEO of the textured haircare brand Bask and Lather Co.
