John Lithgow Calls Rowling’s Beliefs ‘Inexplicable’ Amid Backlash

Actor John Lithgow expressed confusion over author JK Rowling’s stance on biological sex while attending the Rotterdam Film Festival. Lithgow, who stars as Dumbledore in the TV adaptation of Rowling’s celebrated Harry Potter series, discussed the backlash he has faced connected to the controversy surrounding Rowling’s beliefs.

Lithgow described Rowling’s creation of the Harry Potter universe as a significant cultural influence, highlighting its themes of kindness and the battle between good and evil. He added,

“[Rowling] has created this amazing canon for young people and it has jumped into the consciousness of the society. It’s about good versus evil, kindness versus cruelty. I find her views ironic and inexplicable. I’ve never met her, she’s not really involved in this production at all. But the people who are, are remarkable.”

Challenges Faced During Role as Dumbledore Amid Backlash

Lithgow expressed frustration over the negative responses from those who rejected Rowling and her work. Defending his involvement with the Harry Potter franchise, he noted the absence of transphobia within the story’s core messages. He said,

“It upsets me when people are opposed to me having anything to do with this,”

and added,

“But in ‘Potter’ canon you see no trace of transphobic sensitivity. She’s written this mediation of kindness and acceptance. And Dumbledore is a beautiful role.”

The actor revealed that accepting the role was a difficult choice due to the surrounding controversy. He explained,

“It made me uncomfortable and unhappy that people insisted I walk away from the job. I chose not to do that.”

Lithgow also commented on his commitment to the role despite his age, stating,

“I’m the oldest person in this entire room, just turned 80. And yet I signed a contract – I will be playing Dumbledore for the next eight years! I absolutely have to keep at it. I felt: ‘Wow! That means I will live to be 88.’ I have that in writing.”

Festival Role and Representation in New Film Project

During the festival, Lithgow was promoting his new film titled Jimpa, which centers on Hannah, played by Olivia Colman, and her nonbinary teenager Frances. The story explores their reconnection with Hannah’s gay father, Jim, portrayed by Lithgow himself. The character of Frances is portrayed by Aud Mason-Hyde, director Sophie Hyde’s daughter, who identifies as trans and nonbinary.

Rowling’s Stance and Industry Reactions

JK Rowling has sparked widespread debate by publicly supporting the recognition of biological sex, drawing criticism and boycotts from many in the entertainment industry. Since her statements in 2020, several members of the original Harry Potter film cast have distanced themselves from her views, siding with trans activists.

A recent public dispute between Rowling and actress Emma Watson intensified tensions, culminating in Rowling’s claim that Watson

“has so little experience of real life she’s ignorant of how ignorant she is.”
