Jennifer Grey Returns for Dirty Dancing Sequel Filming 2026

Jennifer Grey, renowned for her role in the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, is confirmed to return as Frances “Baby” Houseman in the upcoming sequel, with production scheduled to begin later in 2026. This new installment aims to continue the story of the beloved classic, fulfilling fans’ long-standing anticipation for the Jennifer Grey Dirty Dancing sequel.

Development of the Sequel and Production Details

The script for the sequel, written by Kim Rosenstock, has been finalized, and Grey will also serve as one of the executive producers. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s chair, Adam Fogelson, expressed confidence in the assembled team, indicating the project is progressing rapidly toward becoming a new theatrical film designed for wide cinema release.

Original Film’s Legacy and Uncertain Plot Elements

The original Dirty Dancing, directed by Emile Ardolino and penned by Eleanor Bergstein, was set at the Kellerman’s resort in the Catskills. The story followed Baby’s coming-of-age experience as she fell in love with dance instructor Johnny, played by Patrick Swayze. However, the new sequel’s plot details remain unclear, especially regarding the role Johnny will play, following Swayze’s passing in 2009.

Fan Hopes and Industry Excitement

Nearly four years ago, Lionsgate hinted at this sequel during a 2022 Cinemacon presentation by showcasing clips of the original film alongside a promise that

“Jennifer Grey returns to Kellerman’s in the next chapter.”

Grey shared her own enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing the care taken in assembling a team she trusts to honor the original film’s legacy.

I’ve long wondered where we might find Baby years later and what her life might be like, but it’s taken time to assemble the kind of people that I felt could be entrusted to build on the legacy of the original film,

Jennifer Grey said.

I’m excited to say that it looks like the wait will soon be over!

Adam Fogelson added that the collaboration is moving ahead with a

new theatrical film meant for the big screen.

Impact and Anticipation for the Dirty Dancing Franchise

The original movie remains a cultural touchstone, winning an Oscar for Best Original Song with

“(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life,”

which underscored Baby and Johnny’s final dance. The film inspired various adaptations, including a stage musical, a brief 1988 TV series, 2004’s Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, and a 2017 ABC remake, which received poor reviews. With Jennifer Grey returning, the 2026 sequel is poised to reignite the franchise’s appeal and introduce Baby’s story to a new generation of viewers.
