Timothée Chalamet Spent Six Figures to Perform on SNL

Actor Timothée Chalamet revealed that his appearance on Saturday Night Live last year to promote his Bob Dylan biopic required a significant personal financial investment. The 30-year-old shared that he paid over six figures out of his own pocket to bring the performance to life, underscoring his commitment to the project and the unique demands of the show.

During a discussion with filmmaker Richard Curtis at London’s Prince Charles Cinema, Chalamet explained the details behind his dual role as both host and musical guest on the Jan. 25, 2025, episode of SNL. Unlike typical hosts, he insisted on performing music alongside his hosting duties, which led to negotiations with the show’s producer.

Negotiating Creative Control with SNL’s Lorne Michaels

Chalamet recounted how Lorne Michaels, the creator and executive producer of SNL, first proposed the hosting opportunity.

“Lorne Michaels said, ‘Hey, do you want to host ‘SNL’?’ I said, ‘Yeah, can I do the music?’”

the actor shared. When Michaels initially declined the musical request, Chalamet refused to proceed without it.

“He said, ‘No.’ I was like, ‘Alright, I’m not doing it.’ He said, ‘OK, do the music.’ But I refused to take no for an answer,”

he added. This persistence enabled him to both host and perform during the broadcast.

Chalamet performed three Bob Dylan songs during the episode: Outlaw Blues, Three Angels, and Tomorrow Is a Long Time. According to Entertainment Weekly, he personally covered the production costs for the musical numbers, including hiring a band and building a custom set—expenses usually handled by the artist’s record label.

Unwavering Dedication to the Dylan Role

Chalamet’s dedication to portraying Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown extended beyond the stage. He devoted five years preparing for the role, working intensely with multiple coaches specializing in vocals, guitar, dialect, movement, and harmonica to authentically embody the folk icon.

Reflecting on his level of commitment, Chalamet stated on 60 Minutes in 2025,

“I give 170% in everything I’m doing. I’m giving it my all.”

He compared his approach to the immersive style of actor Daniel Day-Lewis:

“Something like the Dylan project, these aren’t watered-down experiences. I’m going Daniel Day-Lewis on all of them. I’m not saying in process, but I’m saying a level of commitment.”

Chalamet’s Approach to Promotion and Audience Engagement

Chalamet emphasized that his participation in the SNL episode was part of a broader strategy to reach audiences beyond traditional circles. He described his style as departing from pretentiousness, stating,

“This is the new way of doing stuff. I’m trying to reach audiences, you know. I don’t want to be in the pretentious in-crowd.”

Currently focused on promoting his upcoming film Marty Supreme, where he plays an aspiring ping pong champion, Chalamet has adopted unconventional marketing tactics. These include turning the Sphere Las Vegas into a giant ping pong ball and creating satirical online videos involving his film’s marketing team.

Speaking about the audience for Marty Supreme, he noted,

“‘Marty Supreme’ in America had the least frequent moviegoing audience this year — people that weren’t going to see everything.”

He added,

“That’s my favorite feedback on the movie. So the most pretentious answer I could give you, which I actually honestly feel, is that it’s not marketing or promotion. That sounds like a gimmick, and this is not a gimmick. This is coming from my heart and my soul.”

Elaborating further, Chalamet described his creative process as an extension of his artistry rather than simple marketing:

“Here’s the thing — this risks killing any mystery around it, but I really don’t look at it as promotion or marketing. I see myself as an artist expanding. I feel like I’m expressing myself. You know, a lot of people want to be told what to say, how to say it and where to stand — I’m talking on the acting front. Also, people don’t want to misstep. I feel like I’ve got the keys, I’ve got the right attitude, I’ve got the juice.”

Awards Recognition and Future Prospects

Chalamet’s portrayal of the legendary folk singer has earned him critical acclaim, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and nominations for the Golden Globe, Academy, and Grammy Awards. These accolades reflect the depth of his artistic dedication and the demanding preparation he undertook for the role.

With Marty Supreme already generating buzz and securing awards such as a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award, Chalamet is widely regarded as a frontrunner for Best Actor at the upcoming Academy Awards, signaling continued momentum in his career.
