Halle Berry, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2002 for her role in Monster’s Ball, revealed that the award did not dramatically alter her career trajectory. Despite making history as the first Black woman to receive the top acting honor, Berry explained that the win did not lead to a sudden influx of new opportunities. The actress shared these insights in a recent interview discussing the Halle Berry Oscar Impact.
Berry, now 59, said that she expected more changes after winning the award but quickly realized that barriers persisted.
“That Oscar didn’t necessarily change the course of my career,”
she said. She recalled hoping for a “script truck showing up” with roles, but the next day, everything felt the same. Berry highlighted ongoing challenges within the industry, explaining that directors remained reluctant to cast Black women in leading roles.
“Directors were still saying, ‘If we put a Black woman in this role, what does this mean for the whole story? Do I have to cast a Black man? Then it’s a Black movie. Black movies don’t sell overseas,’”
she said.
Conversations with Fellow Oscar Nominee Cynthia Erivo
Berry has also shared her perspective on the realities of winning an Oscar with Cynthia Erivo, a two-time nominee recognized for her roles in Harriet and Wicked. Berry encouraged Erivo by acknowledging her deserving status while offering a realistic view of the award’s influence on an artist’s career.
“You goddamn deserve it, but I don’t know that it’s going to change your life. It cannot be the validation for what you do, right?”
Berry told Erivo.
Berry’s Ongoing Influence and Upcoming Projects
As of 2025, Halle Berry remains the only Black actress to have won the Academy Award for Best Actress. During a conversation with Trevor Noah on his What Now? podcast, Berry reflected on the significance of her historic win. She expressed that she felt chosen to pave the way for others.
“I knew it was bigger than me,”
Berry said.
“I was, in that moment, [destined] to be a beacon of possibility. And I do think it served that purpose.”
Berry also has new projects on the horizon, with the film Crime 101 scheduled to be released in theaters on February 13. Her continued work highlights her lasting presence and impact in the entertainment industry.
