James Gunn’s Superman Sequel ‘Man of Tomorrow’ Unveiled

James Gunn’s Superman sequel, titled Man of Tomorrow, is set to continue Warner Bros.’ ambitious shared DC Universe plans, with a release scheduled for summer 2027. This film, positioned less than two years after the original Superman premiere, promises to explore new dimensions of the iconic hero’s story while introducing a long-awaited villain.

Development and Official Confirmation of ‘Man of Tomorrow’

Before the debut of James Gunn’s Superman, he had already begun crafting a follow-up script, as confirmed in June 2025. Following the positive reception of Superman from both critics and audiences, Gunn formally announced the sequel’s title, Man of Tomorrow, on September 3, 2025. This confirmation came alongside co-stars David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, who revealed specially commissioned artwork depicting Superman alongside Lex Luthor, created by renowned comic artists Jim Lee, Jorge Jimenez, and Mitch Gerads.

The phrase Man of Tomorrow has long been associated with Superman, previously contemplated as a title for Zack Snyder’s sequel to Man of Steel. The 2020 animated film Superman: Man of Tomorrow belongs to a separate continuity known as the Tomorrowverse, and Gunn has clarified that his project will be independent of both Snyder’s unrealized plans and the animated feature.

Projected Release Date and Production Details

Man of Tomorrow is slated for theatrical release on July 9, 2027, almost exactly two years after the original Superman film’s debut. It is positioned as the fourth installment in the DC Universe lineup, following the releases of Superman, Supergirl, and Clayface. Despite concerns about the film’s theatrical window linked to Netflix’s pending acquisition of Warner Bros., legal disputes involving Paramount and Skydance may delay any immediate changes. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has, however, confirmed a 45-day theater window for Warner Bros. films should the deal proceed.

Filming is scheduled to begin in April 2026, with Gunn returning as director and sole screenwriter, a role he held for Superman. Cinematographer Sam McCurdy, who collaborated with Gunn on Peacemaker Season 2 and the series Shogun, will take over from Henry Braham, who worked on several previous James Gunn projects including Superman and Guardians of the Galaxy. Rumors also circulate about the composer changes, with John Murphy possibly not reprising his role, though no official details have been confirmed.

Actors Confirmed to Return and New Cast Members

David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult will reprise their respective roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor, with Rachel Brosnahan expected to return as Lois Lane. On December 20, 2025, Gunn confirmed the addition of German actor Lars Eidinger as Brainiac, the chief villain who fans have long awaited. Early storyboards indicate Brainiac was briefly considered for the first Superman film, showing the character’s early conceptual presence in this franchise.

Frank Grillo is anticipated to continue his role as Rick Flag Sr., connecting the film to other DC projects such as Creature Commandos and Peacemaker Season 2. Isabela Merced, who portrays Hawkgirl, has signaled her participation, hinting at a return with a “see you soon” post referencing Gunn’s announcement. Additionally, Aaron Pierre, star of Lanterns, suggested that his character John Stewart’s Green Lantern may appear in the film.

Gunn has also indicated that many characters introduced in Superman will return, implying the presence of Justice Gang members like Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), though casting confirmations have not yet been made official.

Skyler Gisondo is expected to reprise Jimmy Olsen, who will also headline a character-centric HBO Max spin-off exploring the journalistic team at the Daily Planet. Cast members Wendell Pierce, Mikela Hooper, Beck Bennett, and Christopher McDonald are also anticipated to reprise their roles as Perry White, Cat Grant, Steve Lombard, and Ron Troupe in the spin-off and likely in Man of Tomorrow.

Milly Alcock’s cameo as Supergirl in Superman sets the stage for her standalone film releasing on June 26, 2026. This film is thought to be integral to Gunn’s narrative arc, with the potential for the two Kryptonian cousins to team up in Man of Tomorrow. The presence of Krypto, Supergirl’s dog established in the first film, remains a possibility for this sequel.

There is a notable mystery surrounding the casting of a new female warrior-like character. While initial speculation pointed to Wonder Woman, Gunn has confirmed neither Wonder Woman nor Batman will appear in this film. Instead, this role is currently expected to be Maxima, a character closely tied to Brainiac’s storyline in the comics.

Insights into the Sequel’s Storyline and Themes

Details about the plot remain tightly guarded, but James Gunn has emphasized that Man of Tomorrow will be as much a story about Lex Luthor as it is about Superman. The pair must ultimately join forces to confront a far greater threat, confirmed to be Brainiac. The teaser artwork accompanying the title announcement illustrates Lex Luthor donning his iconic battle armor from the comic books.

While no definitive sources have been cited, rumors suggest the film may draw inspiration from the 1992 Panic in the Sky storyline, which featured Superman and the Justice League combating Brainiac and Maxima. However, Gunn’s previous Superman project was an original tale not directly adapted from any specific comic arc, so Man of Tomorrow could follow a similar path in forging an independent storyline.

Additionally, Gunn has hinted that concepts introduced in Peacemaker Season 2, such as the alternate Salvation dimension and the evolving role of Lex Luthor during his incarceration, may feed into the narrative for Man of Tomorrow. This suggests a broader interconnectedness within the DC Studios projects under Gunn and Peter Safran, who both serve as co-presidents.

With filming approaching rapidly, more concrete plot and casting information will likely surface, especially after the release of the Supergirl film in mid-2026, which is expected to set the stage for the Kryptonian cousins’ collaboration and expand the DC Universe’s scope.
