Maggie Gyllenhaal’s latest movie, The Bride!, created a unique family collaboration when she cast her husband, Peter Sarsgaard, and her brother, Jake, in significant roles. Along with the main cast, Gyllenhaal also included her two daughters, Ramona and Gloria, in surprise cameo appearances, making it a true family event. The movie’s creation involved both sides of the family, blending personal and professional life on set.
Gyllenhaal’s Inclusive Casting of Her Daughters
Gyllenhaal invited her daughters to participate spontaneously, sharing,
“I just thought if they want to, come be in the movie!”
She fondly described their involvement, recalling that her younger daughter, Gloria, who was 11 during filming, appears sitting on a bar near the film’s end, while Ramona was featured alongside dancers, reflecting her serious background in dance. Gloria’s cameo also featured the daughter of production designer Karen Murphy, highlighting the close-knit atmosphere during production.
The Creative Vision Behind The Bride!
The Bride! is Gyllenhaal’s second directing effort, following her 2021 debut with The Lost Daughter. Drawing inspiration from James Whale’s 1935 horror classic, The Bride of Frankenstein, and a tattoo Gyllenhaal once saw of Elsa Lanchester’s iconic Bride, the film reimagines the tale with a bold new twist. Here, the Bride, played by Jessie Buckley, awakens not only to life but also to spark a cultural revolution as she and Christian Bale’s Frankenstein’s monster become outlaw lovers on a daring crime spree, evoking the legendary Bonnie and Clyde.

Gyllenhaal’s version champions those who defy traditional categories and celebrate individuality. She sees her daughters as embodying this spirit, which deeply inspired the film.
“They don’t fit in their boxes, and they were really the inspiration for making the movie,”
she explained.
Peter Sarsgaard Reflects on Working with Family
Sarsgaard appreciated watching their daughters engage earnestly during production, yet he recognized their differing interests with a touch of humor.
“At school, they make things and stuff like that, and they do theater, but they haven’t expressed a lot of interest in being in our business,”
he shared with a smirk, adding, “I wonder why.” His own role as Detective Wiles was a later addition to the cast, but he expressed no concern about joining.
“I guess I generally assume I’ll be in her thing somewhere,”
he said, emphasizing his pleasure in working with close family. He recalled that he has collaborated with Gyllenhaal many times, as well as her brother and even his mother-in-law, reflecting a long history of familial creative partnerships.
The Depth of Collaboration Between Gyllenhaal and Sarsgaard
For Sarsgaard, joining The Bride! was about more than family connections.
“With Maggie, she’s just such an extraordinary talent that even if I were not married to her, I would be trying to get the part,”
he stated. He acknowledged the differences between their on-set personas and their home lives, noting,
“We’re all slightly different people at work than we are at home… I ask ‘why’ too many times at work. I’m a little tougher, maybe, at work.”
Still, he appreciates how experience shapes his craft and values working alongside Gyllenhaal.
Gyllenhaal, in turn, praised her husband’s acting skills and his supportive presence during her filmmaking.
“I just think he’s one of those brilliant actors,”
she said.
“And he was always kind of a part of helping me think things through. It’s just such a Peter way. I just really wanted him to be in the movie. Peter, in some ways, has made a career of taking very flawed, broken people and finding the humanity in them… I wanted to see what he would do with Wiles.”
Family Unity on Set Felt Natural and Special
Although assembling an entire immediate family on a major film is unusual, Sarsgaard viewed it as a natural and meaningful experience.
“It didn’t seem like a big deal, to be honest,”
he remarked.
“It had the feeling of a bunch of people coming together to do something really special.”
The blending of personal and professional relationships appeared effortless, enhancing the film’s production atmosphere.
