Apple TV held its first-ever press event at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar on Tuesday, bringing together the cast and creators of Your Friends and Neighbors ahead of the highly anticipated season two launch. The show, recently renewed for a third season even before season two’s debut, saw creator and executive producer Jonathan Tropper lead a conversation featuring stars Jon Hamm, Amanda Peet, Olivia Munn, Hoon Le, Mark Tallman, Aimee Carrero, and newcomer James Marsden. The focus of the discussion was Marsden’s impactful role as the new neighbor, Owen Ashe, whose arrival threatens to disrupt Andrew “Coop” Cooper’s double life as a suburban thief and endanger his family.
Season Two Develops a More Complex Narrative
Jonathan Tropper prompted the cast to reflect on how season two compares to the first. Jon Hamm described the sophomore season as deeper, darker, and more expansive. He elaborated,
“The first season of a show establishes the world, and then the second season expands that world, expands those characters. This, especially with adding a chaos agent in the form of Mr. Marsden, makes it… we already have the rules of the game set up as we’ve established in season one, and in season two, we can just play the game at a higher level.”
Hamm’s comment highlights how James Marsden’s character injects a new layer of tension and unpredictability into the storyline.
Hamm further elaborated on Marsden’s role, describing Owen Ashe as someone
“living life in a very broad and out loud way, and it’s very attractive to want to be a part of that world, but at what cost is the question?”
This portrayal sets the stage for a season filled with complicated relationships and moral ambiguity.
James Marsden’s Arrival Energizes Both Cast and Crew
The presence of James Marsden on set quickly became a topic of enthusiasm among the ensemble. Aimee Carrero expressed the collective admiration, saying,

“Not only the cast but the crew, everyone’s in love with James. When I had my first fitting, everyone was, like, ‘Have you met James yet? Have you met James? Have you met James?’ Everyone was a titter about you, and you don’t disappoint.”
Her comments underline Marsden’s magnetic personality and positive energy behind the scenes.
Mark Tallman, another cast member, shared his initial curiosity about who would assume the role of Owen Ashe. Upon learning it was Marsden, he remarked,
“My goodness. There really is this energy he brings with him that permeates [on set]. It felt like everyone was like, ‘We have to level up, we have to level up.’”
Clearly, Marsden’s involvement pushed the entire team to elevate their performances and engagement.
James Marsden Embraces His Role as the “New Guy”
For Marsden himself, joining the cast was an exciting opportunity. Having already been a fan of the show, he eagerly engaged with the series. He shared,
“The first season was super juicy. The second season just feels so much more juicy.”
Marsden described his character as
“this magnificently wonderful and delicious role as the guy just doesn’t know how to stop. He’s constantly an engine that is churning at a very high RPM, and it’s fun to play, but it’s also exhausting.”
His energetic portrayal promises to bring tension and intrigue to the unfolding plot.
