Taylor Momsen Hints at Possible Jim Carrey Grinch Sequel

Taylor Momsen, known for her role as Cindy Lou Who in the 2000 holiday film How the Grinch Stole Christmas, shared mixed signals about the possibility of a Jim Carrey Grinch sequel. Speaking recently during Steven Tyler’s 7th annual Jam of Janie Grammys watch party, Momsen, now 32, confirmed that no official sequel plans are currently underway.

“Not that I know of,” Momsen said regarding a second film, highlighting the enduring impact of the original by adding, “Some things don’t touch.”

Teasing a Potential Reunion with Jim Carrey

Despite no official sequel development, Momsen hinted in November that a return could be possible if approached by Carrey. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Tonight, she said,

“When Jim Carrey asks you to do something, you pay attention so we’ll see.”

This comment came shortly after the two actors reunited at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, a meeting that marked their first encounter in 25 years.

Reflecting on the reunion, Momsen exclaimed,

“The whole thing is so crazy. When Matt Cameron told me that, my head about blew up. The odds of that are one in a billion. The whole thing is crazy.”

Momsen Revisits the Classic Song ‘Where Are You Christmas?’

In celebration of the film’s 25th anniversary last December, Momsen and her band, The Pretty Reckless, re-recorded “Where Are You Christmas?,” a song she originally performed in the movie. She recounted the emotional connection to the project, stating,

“’Pretty Reckless Christmas’ started as just one song, but the moment we got into the studio, it took on a life of its own.”

She elaborated that the tribute became much more than a single track:

“There was so much emotion, nostalgia and chaos wrapped up in it that it didn’t feel right to leave it standing alone. To really honor it, I needed to build a whole world around it. That’s how this project became a full body of work — something bigger, deeper and far more personal than I ever expected.”

The Lasting Impact of Studio Experience and Childhood Memories

Momsen also reflected on how the original recording process influenced her musical journey. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she recalled,

“As a kid, when I found out Cindy was going to sing in the movie, I don’t think I’d ever been so excited. I loved singing, and I had just started writing songs around that time.”

She pointed out that her first studio experience provided her with valuable lessons:

“It was my first studio training, where a producer was giving me tricks of the trade. It’s where I fell in love with the recording studio, and to this day, the recording studio is my favorite place in the world to be.”

Behind-the-Scenes Stories from the Film’s Set

Momsen shared fresh insights into filming some of the movie’s iconic scenes, including interactions with Carrey on set. She described a sled rig set on a giant spring that was violently moving side to side, recalling,

“Jim is leaning over and being extravagant Jim. There was a moment where I almost fell out of the sled, and he freaked out. He called cut and started checking in on me.”

Despite the near accident, she was unfazed:

“I was having a great time. I was laughing; I wasn’t thinking about the fact that I just almost fell very high off the ground.”

Momsen also highlighted Carrey’s protective nature on set as a child actress, noting,

“Jim was very, very protective of me on set as a person, as a kid, always looking out for me, checking in, making sure I was okay, because he was very animated, very over the top.”

She added fondly,

“I always felt really safe with Jim. I liked being around him.”

Jim Carrey’s Views on Returning as the Grinch

In early 2024, Jim Carrey addressed the topic of reprising his role as the Grinch in a sequel, responding with a humorous yet frustrated tone. To Extra, Carrey said,

“Everywhere I go, ‘Are you gonna make the ‘Grinch,’ ‘Are you gonna make the ‘Grinch.’ It makes me so angry.”

He jokingly added,

“I must find a way to stop sequels from coming!”

signaling no immediate desire to return to the character.

The Uncertain Future of the Grinch Franchise

With Taylor Momsen’s remarks and Jim Carrey’s playful resistance, fans face an uncertain future for a Jim Carrey Grinch sequel. While Momsen’s hint suggests openness if the right opportunity arises, her comments at the Grammys event underscore the strength and longevity of the original film’s legacy.

The renewed collaboration on “Where Are You Christmas?” and their recent public reunion indicate that nostalgia for the classic is still alive, keeping hopes alive for further projects. However, with no concrete plans announced, the fate of another Grinch installment remains speculative as both actors continue their own artistic paths.
