Michael Shannon Haunts New Horror Doctor Caligari Film

Michael Shannon, known for his roles in Man of Steel and Nocturnal Animals, will play the chilling title character in the upcoming horror movie Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders. Announced in early 2026, the film is directed by John Erick Dowdle, who co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Drew. Set to begin filming in June 2026, this contemporary adaptation renews the legacy of the classic German Expressionist horror story while showcasing Shannon’s commanding presence.

A Modern Take on a Classic Horror Icon

Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders reinterprets the ground-breaking 1920 film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, widely recognized as the first true horror movie. Michael Shannon stars as Doctor Caligari, a mysterious mesmerist who travels with a somnambulist under his control. Together, they leave behind a path marked by horrifying murders. The plot follows a young woman whose boyfriend vanishes under suspicious circumstances, leading her to suspect Doctor Caligari. Despite her convictions, those around her remain skeptical of the sinister doctor’s involvement.

Production Details and Creative Team

The film is fully financed by Anton, which will also manage global distribution rights at the European Film Market in Berlin. CAA Media Finance joins as co-representatives for North American rights. Sébastien Raybaud and Brandt Wrightsman from Anton produce alongside Drew Dowdle for Brothers Dowdle Productions and Stuart Manashil, known for his work on films like His House and Pieces of a Woman. Principal photography is slated to commence in June, marking the first major collaboration on this project for the Dowdle brothers since their Emmy-nominated series Waco, which also featured Shannon.
