Rebecca Ferguson Reveals Why She Stayed Silent on Costar Incident

Rebecca Ferguson has spoken about why she chose not to reveal the identity of the costar who shouted at her during filming, an incident she has described as distressing. The Dune star revisited this moment, explaining that she does not regret keeping the actor’s name private, despite the impact the confrontation had on her emotionally.

Ferguson reflected on the 2024 episode when the actor’s outburst made her cry, describing the experience as frightening and personal rather than about the individual involved. She expressed regret over not addressing the situation differently, but affirmed her decision to remain silent about the actor’s identity.

Ferguson’s Perspective on Industry Changes

Discussing the broader environment on film sets, Ferguson expressed optimism about recent shifts toward better treatment of actors, emphasizing the importance of balancing accountability with kindness. She noted the industry’s movement toward improved behavior standards, stating that while some criticize this as being too “woke,” she views it as a necessary adjustment toward fairness.

“A lot of people say that we’ve become too woke, but I think, no, it’s great,”

Ferguson said.

“The pendulum needs to swing to the other side so that we can find a balance in between.”

The Incident and Its Aftermath

Ferguson detailed the upsetting encounter on the Reign With Josh Smith podcast earlier in 2024, where she described how an unnamed costar’s harsh words left her emotionally shaken enough to leave the set. She recounted how the actor yelled,

“You call yourself an actor? This is what I have to work with?”

which led her to request performing scenes with a tennis ball instead of facing further hostility.

She explained the vulnerability she felt, as this actor was top-billed, leaving her with little support.

“Because this person was number one on the call sheet, there was no safety net for me,”

Ferguson shared. “No one had my back.”

Since revealing her experience, speculation about the actor’s identity has circulated; however, Ferguson has clarified that neither Hugh Jackman nor Tom Cruise was involved.

Relationship with Tom Cruise and Career Highlights

Ferguson first met Tom Cruise after her Golden Globe nomination in 2014 for playing the lead in the BBC series The White Queen. At the time, Cruise was seeking a new costar for his Mission: Impossible franchise, and he chose Ferguson for the role. She has spoken highly of Cruise’s approach, describing him as someone who fosters a safe and professional atmosphere on set.

“He’s a boy who just loves playing, and offers up a safe and professional set. That’s a really good balance [of qualities] to make you want to try new things,”

Ferguson said.

Notably, Cruise’s attitude encouraged Ferguson to perform many of her own stunts, including rappelling down the Vienna State Opera house despite her fear of heights. She continued doing stunts even during her 2018 pregnancy, managing extreme physical demands while maintaining professionalism.

She recounted the challenges of working pregnant, saying,

“I would be fighting, and then I’d run off and vom in a big bag somewhere, have a mint, then run back in.”

Looking Ahead to Dune Part Three

Rebecca Ferguson is set to return in the upcoming third installment of the Dune franchise, scheduled for release in December. Her ongoing career includes not only acting but also executive producing the Apple TV+ sci-fi series Silo, demonstrating her expanding role in the industry.

As discussions about on-set conduct continue to evolve, Ferguson’s experience highlights both the difficulties actors can face and the importance of ongoing efforts to foster respectful working environments.
