Sir Ian McKellen has officially confirmed his return as Gandalf in the upcoming film The Hunt for Gollum, set to shoot in New Zealand this July. Despite his excitement about reprising the iconic role, McKellen expressed reservations about the timing, citing the challenge of working during New Zealand’s winter season.
The 86-year-old British actor, known for his portrayal of the wizard in Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films, will join the cast in this new adventure centered on the cunning character Gollum, played and directed by Andy Serkis. This project continues the expansion of Middle-earth’s cinematic universe, focusing on stories that precede the original films.
McKellen Opens Up About the Challenges of Filming in New Zealand Winter
During an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, McKellen acknowledged the difficulty posed by the current schedule.
“It’s unfortunate, because it’s winter down there and I’m not sure I want to be out there in the wind and the rain,”
he admitted, reflecting on the harsh weather conditions anticipated during the shoot.
Nonetheless, the actor remains enthusiastic about slipping back into the character’s costume.
“Yes, I put on the pointy hat and the beard and the nose and the eyebrows and the moustache,”
McKellen revealed, signaling his full commitment to reprising Gandalf.
Returning Cast and Creative Team Bring Continuity to the Project
The new film will also see the return of Frodo Baggins, the beloved protagonist of the original trilogy, though Elijah Wood has yet to confirm his participation. McKellen noted that the production reunites much of the original creative team, including Serkis and producer Philippa Boyens, aiming to maintain the spirit of the initial films.

Speaking to ScreenRant, McKellen described the collaboration as
“very much that core original group getting back together to tell this story that will feel like a really fun exploration of this character that we all love so much.”
Director Andy Serkis at the Helm of a Character-Driven Story
Andy Serkis, who has made the character of Gollum his own across multiple films, is both directing and starring in The Hunt for Gollum. McKellen expressed his admiration for Serkis’s dual role:
“It feels so unbelievably appropriate that Andy directs a film about his character that he has really made his own. I’m thrilled. It’ll be great. And I’m excited to see. I know their intention is to make other films in this universe.”
Actor’s Previous Statements and Physical Health Considerations
McKellen has previously suggested his continued involvement in the franchise depends on his physical well-being, emphasizing that his ability to perform hinges on
“the legs and the lungs and the mind keep working.”
His concern was particularly relevant in light of recent injuries sustained during a stage performance in June 2024, which included wrist and neck damage.
In an interview with BBC Radio 4, he claimed,
“I’m not letting anyone else put on the pointy hat and beard if I can help it,”
underscoring his determination to maintain the role of Gandalf as long as possible.
Potential Returns from Other Key Cast Members
Viggo Mortensen, who portrayed Aragorn in the original trilogy, has also indicated an openness to reprising his role in future adaptations, provided the projects align closely with J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings. Speaking to The Independent’s Go to Bat series, Mortensen stated he would return
“if it seemed right and was faithful to what Tolkien wrote.”
Anticipated Release and Future Prospects in Middle-earth Universe
The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled for release in 2027, and the excitement surrounding its production suggests a continued expansion of the Middle-earth universe on screen. The involvement of original cast and crew members like McKellen and Serkis points to a project that aims to respect the legacy of Tolkien’s work while exploring new narratives.
The film’s production during the New Zealand winter presents challenges, but the return of beloved characters and familiar creative forces offers hope for fans eager to revisit this richly imagined world.
