Idris Elba Reconnects With Childhood in Masters Universe Role

Idris Elba, known for his diverse and sometimes unconventional roles, steps into the role of Man-At-Arms in the upcoming Masters of the Universe movie, bringing to life a character from a cherished childhood franchise. The film, inspired by Mattel’s iconic toy line and the original cartoons, allows Elba to revisit his youth while portraying the military guardian of Eternia’s royal palace. This role marks another bold addition to his filmography, following his performances as Brixton in Hobbs & Shaw and Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad.

Rekindling Childhood Memories Through the Role

For Elba, playing Man-At-Arms was more than just another acting job—it was a return to a treasured part of his past. He shared that Masters of the Universe was integral to his childhood:

“It’s a really big part of my childhood,”

he said. Elba recalled how his family opted for He-Man toys over the pricier Star Wars sets, owning classics like He-Man, She-Ra, and Battle Cat. The original series also left a lasting impression, known for its lively and somewhat campy style.

“The cartoons were always a little bit more fun, a bit more camp, a bit more out-there,”

he reflected.

Director Travis Knight’s Vision Encouraged Elba’s Enthusiasm

Elba’s excitement for the project grew when he discovered that director Travis Knight aimed to honor the spirit and aesthetic of the original toys and cartoons. He noted,

“Travis, who’s an incredible director, wanted to pay homage to the aesthetic of the original. I was all for that.”

The commitment to authenticity even motivated Elba to prepare physically:

“Though it made me think, ‘Shit, I’ve gotta get into the gym!’”

The production featured large sets replicating Eternia and brought many figures from the series to life, creating a playground-like atmosphere on set.

“It was like being at a big amusement arcade with all these massive characters,”

Elba remarked, capturing the excitement of working amid familiar childhood icons. This immersive environment made the project a fulfillment of a longtime fan’s dream.
