Masters of the Universe Director Labels Leto’s Skeletor Toxic Masculinity

Travis Knight, the director of the upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe film, has described Jared Leto’s version of Skeletor as embodying toxic masculinity. Knight revealed insights during a recent interview with Empire, explaining how he and the cast are revisiting ’80s characters like He-Man to bring them into the modern era. The director highlighted his collaboration with Leto in creating a fresh yet recognizable take on the iconic villain.

Creating a New Take on a Classic Villain

Knight emphasized the distinct qualities that made Skeletor a memorable antagonist in the original Masters of the Universe cartoon. In his view, Skeletor was a complex figure: visually striking, frightening, humorous, and insecure, with a unique voice that set him apart. The director wanted Leto to develop his own authentic version of this character.

According to Knight, Jared Leto approached the film’s team driven by his passion for Skeletor and his past association with the character. Though the first full trailer largely keeps the muscular blue villain hidden, Knight offered some clues about his portrayal.

“He wanted to swing for the fences,”

Knight said regarding Leto’s ambition.

“And ultimately we landed on something that I’m really happy with. Skeletor’s kind of the embodiment of toxic masculinity.”

The Controversial Actor Behind Skeletor

Jared Leto’s career has been marked by mixed reactions, with some praising and others questioning his portrayal of various characters like The Joker and Michael Morbius. His reputation took a darker turn after reports surfaced that he sent disturbing gifts to his Suicide Squad co-stars. In June 2025, allegations from nine women accusing Leto of sexual misconduct, some involving minors, intensified scrutiny. Leto denied these accusations and went on to star in Disney’s Tron: Ares shortly after.

Visual and Vocal Choices for Skeletor’s Character

Details remain scarce about how much of Leto’s face will be visible in the film, as the trailer shows Skeletor with his signature skull head reminiscent of previous versions. The director also revealed that the character’s voice has been carefully considered to avoid radical departures from the original.

In his interview with Empire, Knight recalled rejecting an earlier design concept featuring a golden skull mask.

“I said, ‘F**k that shit. Skeletor has a skull face,’”

he explained.

“That’s just the way it is. It’s a living, talking, emoting skull, and that’s that.”

Release Information and Cast Highlights

Masters of the Universe is set to premiere in theaters on June 5, 2026, featuring Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man. The film demonstrates a strong connection to its roots while aiming to satisfy both long-time fans and new audiences. Recently, a Vintage Castle Grayskull playset inspired by the franchise was also launched, tying into the renewed interest surrounding the brand.
