Jared Leto Swings for the Fences as Skeletor in Master of the Universe

Travis Knight, director of the upcoming film Master of the Universe, recently shared insights about Jared Leto’s portrayal of Skeletor. Speaking to The Empire, Knight revealed he gave Leto the freedom to take risks and deliver a unique performance in this Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel live-action adaptation. The film is slated for release on June 5, 2026.

A Complex Villain Reimagined for a New Audience

Knight described Skeletor as a multifaceted character, blending menace with humor and vulnerability.

“Skeletor was a really interesting villain. He looked cool. He was scary. He was funny. He was insecure. And then of course he had this distinctive voice,”

Knight explained. He encouraged Leto to develop his own version of the character, recognizing the actor’s personal connection and enthusiasm for Skeletor.

The director added,

“I wanted someone to craft their own version of that. Jared approached us, because he loves Skeletor and has his own history with the character.”

Knight emphasized that Leto aimed to push creative boundaries with his portrayal, stating,

“He wanted to swing for the fences. And ultimately we landed on something that I’m really happy with. Skeletor’s kind of the embodiment of toxic masculinity.”

Anticipation Builds With Star-Studded Cast and Early Trailer

Fans first caught a glimpse of Leto’s Skeletor in the film’s initial trailer released in January, which showcased a showdown with He-Man, played by Nicholas Galatzine. The movie also features notable actors including Idris Elba, Alison Brie, Charlotte Riley, Kristen Wiig, James Purefoy, and Morena Baccarin. The combination of this talented cast and Knight’s vision is raising anticipation for a fresh take on the beloved universe.

Significance of Leto’s Performance and What to Expect

Jared Leto’s Skeletor performance signals a deliberate departure from typical villain portrayals, aiming to blend intimidation with deeper emotional layers. This approach aligns with the film’s goal to reimagine classic characters for modern audiences, potentially redefining the franchise’s tone and character dynamics. As the June 2026 release approaches, fans and critics alike await how this daring interpretation will resonate on screen.
